2002 SL1
Default 1998 SL1 horn wont work on steering wheel or keychain remote -checked fuse under hood

Well I did a bit of searching and reading, and I found a really good thread http://www.saturnfans.com/forums/sho...ight=Horn+dead
but I'm not sure it's going to help me figure this out.

We purchased a 98 SL1 yesterday and I noticed the horn wouldn't work. I have a 2002 SL, so I know a "little" (I stress "little") bit about Saturns. I checked the fuse under the hood it looked good, but I replaced it with another 10 amp fuse. Still the horn doesn't blow when I press the steering wheel button, or the button on the keychain remote.

I read in the other thread that inside the car by the passengers feet that there's another fuse box, but I haven't looked in it yet. In my manual, or my Hayes repair book nothing tells me whats inside the fuse box by the passengers feet. Is there something there that might be my problem?

I know you guys said in the other thread to make sure it's grounded and that the wires are ok, but I have to admit (please forgive me), I'm not really that knowledgeable about all the stuff under the hood. I'm great with tearing desktop computers apart and rebuilding them, I've just not gifted when it comes to cars.

Don't get me wrong, I can change the oil, air filter, spark plugs, and front brakes but that's about it. I need to learn more about these cars, because my wife is getting a 1997 SL2 in the next couple weeks (if the deal goes through).

So any suggestions on how I can fix this and not have to take it to a dealer would be appreciated.

Go easy on me, and don't use too much technical jargon. Thanks!

there could be a loose connection, short, or your horn is blown

i'd be careful with the '97 because there is a slight problem with the fuel pump not being able to spin up to pressure fast enough, i'd get in the car, turn the key to RUN but not START, put seatbelt on, then start car, so that the pump has enough time to spin up to pressure. Good luck!

The horns on the 96' and UP cars have the horn relay built into the horn. If the fuses are all good, odds are the horn itself is at fault.

You will need: Automotive type test light (Walmart $8~10 if you don't have one)

To check:

Locate the horn. (Below/behind driver's side headlight not easy to see or get to)

It will have three wires goingi into it.

1 will have positive power all the time
1 will have ground all the time
1 will have NEITHER

With the "dead" wire probed with a test light hooked up to battery positive, have someone press the horn button on the wheel. If the test light lights up, the relay IS getting a ground signal from the horn button and the horn itself is shot. (Replace horn)

dude it most likely the horn, i drove my saturn for like a year without the horn cos i assumed it was an electrical problem, i won't even lie, i loved yelling at the people in front of me, but only during traffic, when i got cut off all i could do was stare. I found my horn when i took off the front bumper, replaced it and BAM!!!!! that was it, so check it out,

Thank you very much for your help. I'm sorry to bother you!

I went Walmart and they didn't know what a "automotive type test light" was. I explained what I was going to use it for and they told me that I would have to go to a speciality store for something like that. Anyway, I'm wondering if you could post a link to what one of these things look like. It doesn't have to be at Walmart. I'll just go find one once I know what the look like.

Also, I went to a junk yard today (first time ever). It was a lot of fun. I found a bunch of Saturns that people REALLY stripped for parts. Anyway I was only looking for that handle thing that goes in the roof above the back seat passenger door. Got one for only $2.00. I saw so many other neat things that I'd like to go back and check out. If I ever get in a accident and need a new headlight or taillight I'll sure get one there. Oh yes, we also got two nice Saturn mats for only $5. I'll need to clean them a little, but I bet they will look like new!

I have a Haynes Saturn S-Series 1991 to 2002 manual and I'm trying to find the horn in the book, but there's nothing in the index under "horn". Anyone know where in the book it might be? Do you think I might be able to find a replacement horn in the junkyard?

Thanks again everyone for your help! :-)

you can get one from the junkyard no prob, but you may have bought a non-working one so be careful!

Three questions,

Is there a link that I can see where the horn is located?

Will the "dead" wire just be hanging there?

Approximately how much $$ is a new/used horn?

Thank you!

Thanks everyone. Especially Wolfman and XSaturn3X.

I found the test probe at Advanced Auto Parts for $2.48. Hooked it up like Wolfman said and found that the wiring is fine, but the horn must be DOA. Now I just need to buy the correct horn. They had some for $11.48, but they had 2 terminals.

When I search their website they have http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductD...pe=856&ptset=A this one for $36.99, but it doesn't say how many terminals it has.

Where can I find a 3 terminal horn?

Thank you!
