Default How hard to change 3.5L AWD torque converter?

1) How high do you have to raise the car on jackstands?

2) Can the transmission be removed without the engine?

3) Do you have to pull the transmission all the way out from under the car or can it be changed by dropping it just a little bit?

4) What brand for replacement?

This is a difficult job for an experienced technician to perform in a well equipped shop. The engine will have to be supported From above with an engine support. Then the frame can be removed, lowing the engine about 4 inches at the front and more at the rear to remove the transmission with a transmission jack ( this is a heavy transmission)

...In my opinion, I would treat it like a motor change, drop the cradle, you are going to have have the vehicle pretty high to drop it and have room to separate the trans from the motor. also unbolt the strut from that side from the subframe. get some heavy duty jackstands , I bought a set of 10 ton ones from sunnix, overkill yes , but I did not want the body to move when the cradle was dropped. it is a involved process. also while everything is apart , check you trans lines , motor mounts, etc. my lines were pretty rusted. change you radiator hoses too, use bungy's to hold the radiator up into the frame, hopefully you get the idea of whats involved, the trans will have to come out enough to pull the converter from trans, grap a factory one or buy a good used one from ebay, good luck with the subframe bolts. it might be a good idea to grab a couple from gm . a lot more is involved , hope this somewhat helps, DC.

I lowered my car with the wheels off onto a couple of heavy duty furniture dollies, unbolted the struts, subframe bolts, exhaust, awd driveshaft, emptied radiator , hoses, wiring harness in engine comp. battery, etc, then raised the vehicle with 2 jacks on either side of vehicle . high enough to put on jackstands and to move the cradle to access the trans. the trans is not really that heavy compared to motor. but it will have to come out . keep track of all the bolts , flywheel to converter , bellhousing , diff. sizes. if you take your time it doesn't take to long. , DC
