Default No Code High Idle (and EGR question)

Trying to chase down a recent high idle issue on '02 SL, started by looking at all the usual culprits, namely IAC and TPS (replaced 11/18). Not to my surprise, they both looked surprisingly clean/good. Assuming AZ will back lifetime warranty, will slap some new parts in... .

While I was poking around, pulled the EGR valve off to show it some love - only been replaced once in last 17 years. Again, was pretty clean.

My question is - does the pintle of a healthy EGR move fairly freely (with some spring resistance), or should it feel like it has a solid/mechanical connection and offer some higher resistance to move it?

Will cross the third of a million mile mark in the next month, and doubt I would have made it half that way without the members of this forum. Am amazed every day I drive this vehicle it is willing and able to haul my rear down the road with minimal issues and care.

REWARD EXCELLENCE!

On a 3rd gen SOHC the usual culprit of a high idle is a failed intake manifold gasket. I believe it's folded on the passenger side, but a quick spray of carb cleaner or starter fluid at idle from one end to another should revel it.

The EGR's I had on earlier models moved freely with little resistance once the carbon-lock was broken.

Appreciate confirmation on EGR function. The first time it came off it was caked up with carbon and didn't move much (and subsequently replaced).

AZ swapped old parts for new - is it just me or does anyone ever feel they're getting someone's old parts in exchange - I swear the "new" TPS looked worst than the one I returned... . And boxes always seem to have lots of wear and tear which I wonder how they arrive in this condition.

Regardless, after start up and gradual idle reduction as new parts calibrated, seems to have cured issue.

Just sharing -

The reason I joined this forum was because of my high idle issue. I kept getting the code for the EGR, then the O2 sensor and then back to the EGR. I bought a scan tool to verify what might be happening and ended up replacing several original sensors and still had a problem.

It was only after joining this forum and doing a search was I able to find the solution. The advice I followed was to get an original TPS part to solve my issue and low and behold it did.

Because the part has been discontinued, although you can find them, I had the dealer do the work so I had a guarantee in case the issue came again. The original TPS part lasted until the car hit about 210,000 miles so I am fairly sure I will be ok, since I have an additional original TPS, in my parts stash.
