Yesterday, I replaced my alternator. Rozzie is now on its 4th alternator. They seem to last in the ballpark of 60-70k miles. I have an extra-long Purolator oil filter on my car, so getting the alternator out and the new one in was pretty special.

Finally got around to doing my odometer bulbs. Did end up following richpin's video and dropping the steering column to get a bit more room to work. All in all a fairly simple job with the right tools and a splash of patience. Also washed and waxed her Saturday.

The '99 had the stumbles and threw a P1404 for EGR position. Slapped the body panels and wheel back on the '98 to back it out of the hangar. After dinner we'll pull the EGR and clean it. I thought we did when we rebuilt it. Do they wear out?

The carbon can hold the pintle off the seat enough that it get hot gas cut and then it leaks all the time eventually causing rough idle and odd carbon buildup. The screen gasket takes care of the carbon flakes holding it open though.

You can leak test it if you have one of those rubber tipped blow guns and an air pressure regulator that you can set for 30 psi. Turn over fill area around closed valve pintle and pressurize through the other port. Bubbles or violent oil ejection is a leaking valve that is no good.

At some point they do fail, clean or not. Our original was dirty when it first acted up, but after cleaning it still acted up some. Pulling it shows it clean as can be, and it had free movement and such as well.

Cleaned-up a spare driverís seat belt.
The one in the car now doesnlt retract well. So, I watched a video: https://youtu.be/NH3EVut9GXQ
...and fearlessly removed one cover, and then the other cover** . Relizing I was not wounded, I decided to rewind the spring after wiping off the old lube. It can be re-wound. I wound it tighter than it was in hopes of getting better retraction action. It is just a clock spring and not a constant-tension spring.
