The OEM connector has only 3 "prongs" as you call it. Here's a photo of it.

It's been a while but if I remember correctly, that fourth connector is for remote radio control (like steering wheel mounted controls)? Of course, the S's don't have that option so there is no connection on the OEM harness for it.

Interestingly enough, GM used this same set of connectors in the full size pickups at least back in '88 to maybe '94?/95? (whenever they changed the interior designs). At that time, the actual stereo was basically directly above your right shin as you sat in the driver's seat, under the dash, (over the gas petal). If that particular connector is in-fact used for a remote controller, that makes sense as the "stereo" that sits in the dash above the heater controls in those trucks was just a control panel. I believe you are perfectly right and most aftermarket harness adapters I've seen come through with that set of connectors detachable from the rest in case they're not used/needed.

I believe that on the saturn s-series cars, the 4th prong is there for the optional CD changer. The AUX button on the EQ radio is for CD changer.

The s-series cars are not pre-wired for all options. If you get the CD changer, you'll have to remove the interior wire harness out of the car (takes about 3 hours to do properly) and replace yours with it, or you'd have to make your own hook-up.

Quite correct. In 1995, the year the interior was upgraded to the second generation interior, an optional trunk mounted CD changer was offered. The extra connector was for that. The 1995 SL-2 we still have, we ordered and bought new. I specifically asked to have the CD harness included but did NOT want their changer as they were VERY proud of it. I later purchased an aftermarket trunk mounted changer.

Not quite right. In my 99 SC-2, while it had the radio with the EQ, (which does control the CD changer) it did not have the trunk changer OR the harness. That harness WAS, (at least at one time), available from Saturn through the parts department. I did order the harness and installed it. It was not difficult. The additional harness was separate and only had to be routed from the console to the trunk. Since it was separate, it did NOT replace the existing harness, just in addition to it. Had the harness been specified when the car was ordered, it WOULD have been incorporated in the existing radio harness. But again, the changer harness CAN be added without having to remove the existing harness. That is of course depending on whether or not you can still get it.
