Happy Gasoline - Regular, Mid Grade, or Premium?

Okay, I have had my Astra for exactly one week. I love driving it. Gas mileage between snow storms has been around 26 mpg.

My question to all you Astra drivers and experts are what type of gasoline should my Astra take to give me the best gas mileage and no knocking? According to the manual, they recommend 87 or mid grade gasoline. Is everyone following this or trying 85/regular or the premium stuff? Any thoughts, comments would be greatly appreciated.

To everyone who has an Astra, Congrats. And to all who are undecided, this is the best Saturn since the original S-Series.

REWARD EXCELLENCE!

Given the compression ratio of the engine and the electronic management of OBDII, 87 octane should be just fine. Everything I have read over the years bears this out. Spending extra money for higher octane fuel in the stock motor is not going to get you anything, except less money in your pocket. The oil companies are working very hard on that part already without your assistance. 87 octane hit $3.30 a gallon here yesterday and I'm sure it is higher elsewhere in this country.

At the QT where I buy fuel, regular was "just" $2.97/gallon yesterday. Within 30 days I expect all three grades to rise in price.

The minimum we use over here is 95 but the normal is 97, then we have 99 with a few BP stations offering 102. We are now near to 5/gallon or $10 US and thats for 97

Where are you that you can get 85? I've never seen less than 87 here.

I just got gas this afternoon, and diesel was $3.95/gal. This at one of the cheaper places in the area.

Use 87. When the car gets old a tank of premium might help eliminate knocking (it did in my SC2). In that case mpg went down. I've also heard that using high octane may actually hurt your engine.

I suspect that Europe uses a different method for computing octane ratings.
