Default Number of instrument cluster bulbs

Half the cluster is not illuminated on the 2000 SC and am trying to find out how many bulbs I will need to buy. Anyone know how many there are total or how many I will need? Not including the odometer bulb which I dont need. The 2 white strips on the top dont light up (guessing these are responsible for lighting up the needles), and also the bulbs that illuminate the right half of the RPM gauge. The needles as well do not illuminate. Basically at night I'm only able to see the fuel gauge, speedometer, and left half of the RPM gauge.

Also learned a new Saturn repair as the front crank seal blew out today. I didnt realize how easy it would be to fix. Crank pulley bolt came right off, and the pulley came off easily with a couple of prybars.

Are there any located on top of the cluster (not visible in the pic)? I thought for sure there were more than 4 bulbs that lit up everything.

I don't have a 3rd gen and it looks like not a lot of people have done LED conversions which is where they generally need to know how many bulbs. You may want to read the whole thread for the below links

according to post 4

Quote:
The two blinker lights, high beam indicator, DRL indicator, odometer, 4 backglow lights, and the 2 flood lights are all twist-lock. I've converted all of my bulbs in my cluster to LEDs
according to post 14
Quote:
I see I'm going to order 8 bulbs, all of them the B8.5D variety -- 3 green for turn signal and DRL indicators, 1 blue for high beam indicator and 4 white (or should I go with amber?) for backlights.
If you're just replacing regular bulbs, you can buy extra and either return them or keep them on hand for spares. They're pretty cheap at auto stores

So these bulbs are not dealer only? The first time I replaced them on another car, Auto Zone told me they didnt carry that type. It looks like the bulb and the blue plastic housing that screws into the cluster is all one unit (pictured on the right).

I had to replace the odometer bulb on my Gen 2 ('98 SL2) and I think it looked like the blue one you have in your picture. The auto store sold the bulbs but not the blue holer. With a pair of needle nose pliers and some, I carefully removed the burned out bulb from the holder and put the new bulb in. Maybe I broke the old bulb while taking it out of the bulb holder.

I don't remember the details of the bulb replacement because I was mad at myself for breaking the emergency flasher button on top of the steering column while taking out the instrument cluster. I didn't lower the steering column the first time I pulled the cluster.

I just took everything apart and found out that I need 3 bulbs. 2 on the top and 1 on the back of the cluster. The dealer only had 2 yesterday which I bought and just installed, so now I will need to get one more.

I have replaced these bulbs on one of our other cars before, just couldnt remember how many there were total.

since the instrument cluster bulbs are somewhat a pain to replace i had considered doing a led conversion on my car. are the led's just as bright as the standard bulbs in the instrument panel?

on my sl1 98 there is 18 of the smaller ones and 6 of the bigger ones total 22

i had a p1640 1641 codes so i didnt take any chances i group relamp the I/P
in concideration that my car was allready 11 years old and there was a good possibility that some others would go out with time and the fact that on those cars its quite a job just to remove the Instrument Panel dont forget that my car not all tell tail lights are used so they're may be a few more or less lamps in your case

depends on which you get.

i got the absolute cheapest there were on superbrightleds.com, and they're slightly dimmer than incandescent, but they are blue (which tend to be dimmer, anyway) and were the lowest rated light output. they do have much brighter ones available, but they can run up to around $10/bulb.

do they dim like the regular bulbs? does the ones that flash interfere with the flashing of the turn signal lights?

yes to the first, no to the second.

the dimmer curve seems a bit steeper to me, but it could just be that the bulbs are a little lower output.
once business picks up and i get back to full time, i'll be upgrading to the WLED5 series probably in cool white, which should be much brighter.

one other small difference, the SES and coolant lights now are very dimly lit whenever the car is on, very mildly annoying, but they're dim enough that there's no question when one of them actually goes on.

so, looking at their numbers, the lowest output bulbs are all around 100 microcandela, the highest (that fit my instrument cluster) are around 10 candela

the led's that illuminate the majority of the cluster like the speedometer & tach are they as bright as regular bulbs? those seem to me that they would only illuminate smaller areas since the led's have a narrow beam....

the wled5 series have a very wide range, and are very bright. the others are either a 100 degree angle (what i've got, and pretty decent) or a 120 viewing angle (probably ideal)
