Default 2003 Ion 2 4-Door Excessive Tire Wear

I don't think I've put a single set of tires on my car that wore evenly. I've had alignments, the works and the edges always wear thin coupled with a "thudding" when driving. I've had everything inspected, aligned and replaced, still happens. Any ideas? I'm very conscious of tire pressure and maintain it as I should according to the owners manual.

Assuming your driving style and tire rotations are "normal"... I've got nothing.

Have you had all your tire work done by a single shop?

Maybe a second or third opinion from different Tire Shops are in order?

It's possible there is something the original shop overlooked or their equipment has screwed up...

Care to share the types of tires you've driven on this vehicle? Summer/Winter/All-Season...

I've been to several different shops and the answer is always the same. I buy lower to mid-grade all season radials.

I'd suggest looking at tirerack.com and see if you can find the various different kinds of all season tires you've used on this vehicle and see if reviews/surveys might give you clues as to what kind of wear others have seen.

After that... check the warranty coverage on your current set... you might want to try making a claim. If the shops/paperwork can backup that the vehicle is not the problem... then you might have a case that the tires are junk.

You know what? The edges wear thin on my car too. I put this down to the awful suspension on these cars. Lowering and a mild torsion upgrade does wonders for these cars and can be done for 400 to 500. Very worthwhile investment. The bodies roll too much and cause wearing on the outside of the tires. Icreasing tire pressure slightly can help a bit(going from 30PSI to 32PSI say). Slowing down in corners more than you do will help a lot.

Good point about tweaking the PSI (I think my Goodyear Tripletreds were recommended at 32 PSI (instead of 30) by my local shop).

That along with regular tire rotations and the other tips you suggested might help a lot.

Now to start thinking about your suggestion of suspension upgrades on my ION.

My ion has stock suspension, with a rear anti sway bar, and not only does it not roll at all, but out does not wear my tires unevenly. I do ruin nitrogen in my tires, and this run it 2-4psi higher, but the stock suspension is not that bad, if you know the weaknesses to fix. Lowering is not necessary, the bar brings it into balance just fine.

Don't knock lowering until you have tried it! Center of gravity is lowered and that makes one hell of a difference!
