Default 2003 l200 brakes making grinding noise after lockup

my daughter was driving my wife's car the other day & someone cut her off. she hit the brakes hard to the point of causing the tires to lock up and skid a little.
after that there was a noise that sounds like metal on metal whenever the brakes are pressed.
it seems to be coming from the rear passenger side.
is sounds like the pads have come loose. i am waiting for my b-in-law to bring over his jack so i can remove the tire and look at the brakes, calipers & rotors.

i believe this model has the abs system.
could this be the cause?
is it possible to reset the abs system?

the sounds only occur when the brakes are applied and it only seems to be coming from the one side.

thanx in advance for your help.

Something's wrong here.

1-ABS always works and never lets the brakes lock up so there's something wrong - ABS never activated with the "foot massage" from the brake pedal?

2-Normal ABS is self activating and does not need any resetting - slam on the brakes, ABS activates when any wheel locks up and is released immediately to spin back up to all the other wheels, locks and unlocks as often as necessary to allow controlled braking without ever really locking up. Hence the "foot massage". All wheels will be controlled by ABS as long as the brakes are pressed HARD. If the brakes actually locked up and left tire marks on the ground then ABS was disabled internally due to a fault. This does not imply that brakes won't work (as some are overly concerned with) as our brakes still work without ABS.

3-Was the ABS light ever turned ON before or after the brakes were used? A normal engine start up has every electronic computer go through their own self tests. ABS lights up during its self tests and if its own self tests passes, it turns off the ABS light. Whenever the brakes are used and ABS is activated, the ABS light will turn on to inform the driver that ABS is operating (foot massage). When the brakes are released, ABS should release also and turn off the light for the next event.

ok, sorry about the confusion.
just checked the owners handbook & it appears that this car does not have the ABS option installed. so i guess it is just the regular type of anti lock brakes?

i apologize for sounding like a noob.

i also noticed that the rear brakes are the drum kind, not like the front disc brakes.

thanx again.

Confusion is part of being a Saturnfan!?

There is no such thing as regular anti-lock brakes. Either the car has anti-lock brakes or not. The easiest way to tell, besides reading the owner's manual is to simply turn the ignition key to the ON/RUN position and observe all the instrument panel lights. The letters "ABS" in a circle will light up or not. No light = no ABS.

(1) Air Bag Readiness
(2) Safety Belt Reminder
(3) Low Fuel
(4) MIL Service Engine Soon
(5) Service Wrench
(6) Washer Fluid Low
(7) *Daytime Running Lamps (DRL)
(8) *Left Turn Signal
(9) *High Beam
(10) *Right Turn Signal
(11) Engine Oil Pressure
(12) Antilock Brake System (ABS)
(13) Charging System
(14) Engine Coolant Temperature Warning
(15) Reduced Power (V6 Only)
(16) Low Traction
(17) Brake System Warning
(18) Change Oil Soon
(19) Decklid/Liftgate Ajar
(20) Shift Up, Manual Trans Only
(21) Low Coolant Warning
(22) Security

Whether or not the car has ABS, there's obviously a problem and removing the rear brakes for inspection is needed.

Have we gone off topic? This sure sounds like a bad/broken brake pad, or something has become lodged in the caliper . This should be a cheap and easy fix. Many people are unaware of whether they have ABS or not. Sad, given that there are different braking techniques used with and without ABS.

thanx for all the replies!

ok, my b-in-law came over with the jack & after about 20mins of pounding on the drum with a rubber mallet & a shot of liquid wrench, we finally got the drum off.
as soon as we got it off, one of the pads (or what was left of it) came completely off the shoe!
that is what was making the noise.

then it was off to autozone for a $22 pair of new shoes.
will be installing them this afternoon hopefully before the rain.

as a side note,

you all were correct in assuming that the car does not have anti-lock brakes or an abs system.
there was no abs light on the dash.

thanx again for all your help!

i am sure i will be back as other things might start to happen as the car gets older & adds more mileage.
right now it is about 80k.
