2003 ION-2 Sedan
Default charcoal canister

Hi guys,
I have a 2003 Ion2 Sedan, and because of the wonderful amount of salt that gets put down around here, the metal end of my charcoal canister is very rusted and looks ready to fall off. I've done some searching online for a new (oor gently used) one and it looks like there are several OE numbers for these between the model years but all look the same. The cheapest new one I can find for the 03 is like 150 bucks. The new ones for 06 and 07 are significantly cheaper. Are they all interchangeable or do I have to go with what they say fits my 03? Some sellers on ebay who have used ones say they fit all years so I figured Id double check before dropping some cash. And I honestly would prefer a new one but don't wanna spend the money on the one for the 03 if a newer models is interchangeable and cheaper. Thanks!

In 05, and 07, they changed ecus and control programs. So, it's reasonable to assume the charcoal canister would have differences.

2007 ION-2 Quad Coupe
Default Re: charcoal canister

If we accept what GM lists for part numbers and disregard the description, then p/n 19259322 is for all 2003-2005 Ions and p/n 19259320 is for 2006-2007 Ions w/NT7 or NU1 emissions option. Period. Another part that is listed by AC Delco but no longer listed by GM is p/n 19259321. This is specified for use on 2007 Ions w/NU6 (PZEV California Emissions). All part numbers also specify that the use of wire harness p/n 19257603 is required.

Everything mentioned below is just an educated guess on my part. I have no way to confirm anything without installing said parts on said cars to see what happens. I believe all parts will physically fit all Ions, but it's just a matter of whether or not they will trigger an SES light.

After looking at the descriptions for part numbers 19259322 and 19259320 (see screenshots below) I came to the following conclusions:
-p/n 19259322 will work for all 2003-2005 Ions, but cannot be used for any 2006-2007 Ions.
-p/n 19259320 must be used for 2006-2007 Ions w/NT7 (Federal Emissions) or NU1 (LEV2 California Emissions), but should also work for all 2003-2005 Ions.

2007 listing

I suspect that p/n 19259322 was slightly modified to make it compatible with 2006-2007 Ions. The modified part was assigned p/n 19259320 just to differentiate it, but the changes were subtle enough that it is still backwards compatible and could be used in lieu of 19259322. This would explain the overlap in model years shown the description.

Wrench Re: charcoal canister

Old Thread but still relevant to the Ions and Cobalts still on the road. I did not see anything google wise for Cobalts referencing this exact question. By chance has anyone tested this and had success?

Backstory:
I have '05 Cobalt (same ID number as the ION 19259322). All Canisters online charge about $60 plus more than the newer 19259320. If the difference is just emissions, then I would suspect the newer ones changes would just be dormant on my vehicle?
I did buy the 19259320. After replacing, cleared the code by unhooking the battery. I drove it around town for about 15 minutes, in-between this time restarting the car about 5 times. The check engine light came back on after letting it sit overnight. I have replaced all sensors but there's this connector attached to the canister purge solenoid. I used to have the issue with fill ups where the gas hose would stop whenever even though it's not full. That has been resolved with this part.
Any updates would be appreciated.

The part you have your hand on in that picture looks like it doesn't belong there. I don't see anything resembling it in any Cobalt or Ion parts diagrams I've looked at. It looks like an EVAP service port that someone added, but it appears to only have one hose going to it in the picture. If that's the case, someone would've had to remove the hose from where is should go or tap into an existing hose. I'm thinking it's the source of your problem. Trace the hose back to where it comes from.

Is it possible to get another picture of that part from a different angle?

Do you know what codes you're getting?

Default Re: charcoal canister

Sorry for the delay. I wanted to make sure to answer your questions fully. That took some time.
1. Solenoid part is on all the cobalts. I double checked some youtube videos and it's some type of release. All the sensors for the EVAP have been replaced. I went as far as changing the fuel filter last year and gas cap twice before caving and getting the canister 19259320.
2. The Check Engine Light was a very good question to ask and that was the hold up. The next day, I went to an auto parts place. P0135! The code was different than what it's been P0446 since the last time I checked (like 6 months prior) and the engine has been on since then so I was assuming it would just be the same and that was stupid on my part.

I ordered the ACDELCO brand (213-1693) plus the Tekton 3/8 inch socket (47749) and the engine light has gone off. The vehicle has 220,000 miles on it. Hoping to keep it running til 300K

The bigger question I wanted to clarify for anyone else that may have an old ION or Cobalt is you CAN use 19259320 - it is backward compatible. There's no reason sellers are gauging consumers on the older 19259322 but at this rate it doesn't matter as long as there are forums like this to clear things up.

I added photos of all the information on the 19259322 verses 19259320 because physically there are differences but not to any of the sizes for hoses.
