1997 SW2
Default SW2 Halloween Costume

I’ve been pretty bad at following through with plans lately. They say if you have a goal you need to write it down. Here is where I am writing it down. My son in-law’s company is sponsoring a Halloween Themed 5k costume footrace. I hurt my foot training for it so I will probably walk it or run it slowly. Since I am destined to go slow I figure I can concentrate on the costume, and I can’t think of anything better than creating a quarterish scale replica of my Green SW2. Something small and light enough to run wearing/driving it.

I was searching images on the internet and, as far as I can surmise, nobody has created a Saturn car costume. I did re-discover the official Saturn SW2 paper car model artwork which I can blow up and create in a green version. I will post pictures of my progress here.

Just make sure your water bottle is labeled Mobil 1 Synthetic or Shell Rotella T6, just for authenticity.

Default Re: SW2 Halloween Costume

So I just finished my first assembly of the Saturn SW2 paper model. I really was surprised how rounded it was. I was expecting it to be more boxy. I tried to find someone local that might be able to print on flexible foam but to no avail. I did find a youtube video of a large machine printing on flexible foam. I think recreating this paper model in a sheet of printed 3/4” thick foam rubber would be pretty ideal.

https://youtu.be/yUQSRSXrvO4

However, I imagine if I did find someone with these capabilities it might be quite expensive.

Default Re: SW2 Halloween Costume

I’ve decided to construct the costume out of rigid construction insulating foam. A 4’ x 8’ x 2” thick sheet of the stuff is $33.99 at The Home Depot. I will have to get a little cartoonish with the proportions since at a true 1/3 scale the car would be 22” wide but 59” long which is too big to walk around in at a Halloween party (An additional reason for creating the costume)
Going the foam route will require a lot of shaping and sanding but I think it will be a lot of fun and rewarding labor.

Actual SW2 dimensions:
177″ L x 67″ W x 55″ H

1/4 scale (my waist can’t fit inside a 16.75” wide car)
44.25 L x 16.75W x 13.75H

1/3 scale (too long to walk around indoors in)
59″ L x 22″ W x 18.33″ H

I am guessing I will attempt the 1/3 scale height and width while using 1/4 scale for the length (front to back proportions).

SW2 vFoam Blocks 10-09-18.jpg

figuring out what I need as far as 2" thick foam blocks to be glued together before sculpting and shaving it down - I took the 1/3 scale Height and Width with 1/4 scale Length proportions and then scaled this entire size down 81.81% for an overall size of 16"H x 18"W x 36"L.
I have created a work bench in the center of my overcrowded garage out of a folding ladder and a sheet of 4x4 plywood board cut to a 37"x 59" working surface.

I have purchased the $33.99 4x8x2" slab of Foam and cut and snapped it two ways to get it into the mother ship. I also purchased the $11.00 can of Glidden Gripper Primer to use as Glue.

Foam Garage.jpg

I think the best way to approach this costume is to hijack the theme of the old Donruss 'Odd Rods' stickers from the 60's and 70's. Who remembers "Big Daddy Ed Roth' and his 'Rat Fink'?

sample...
5554318369_313a2eb273_b.jpg

I am seriously considering sculpting the cotton Ball clusters of smoke around the tires. Since the Saturn is front wheel drive, the majority of the smoke will be wrapping around the front tires with some residue on the rears.

Was able to spend a few more hours on the SW2 running costume tonight. I have resorted to using a fully extended snap off utility knife as my main tool for final sculpting and texturing detail. There is just not enough time for me to contour the sides with any accuracy so the sides will be flat. I also don’t have the hours to smooth and sand the body so I am expecting a final result resembling a wood carving.

Lost a day of painting (last night) dealing with snow storm and wife’s dead battery. I did have the mini-SW2 in the back of the big SW2 driving around for the trip to work and back with the heat cranking in order to cure the Rust-oleum paint which spent the previous night in a too cold garage. I couldn’t risk the smell of the paint in the house and messing with my wife’s asthma.

Something very fetus in the womb about the situation.

I have one night left to finish everything I want to do.
