How can I tell if my car has a California or North Eastern emissions package? I was told the previous owner lived in California so does that mean it probably would be? Also, what exactly is modified with the package? Thanks for the help!

I own a 1997 sl2.

The "Saturn Power Module" label under the hood should say what emissions standards the car meets.

I can't think of anything off the bat different for 97 but it could be something subtle like computer calibration.

Wait...what is the difference? I recently moved to CA from OH and haven't transferred my car registration etc. yet. Will it pass smog? Is there anything special I need to do or get? I have a 95 SL2...

This seems like the only question the people on the boards can't answer...

CA to OH = no problem if it's running right. CA is stricter.

California Emissions cars have a precat in the front exhaust manifold - a secondary, smaller catalytic converter. Saturn started putting it on ALL of the S-cars midway through the 99 model year, but CA Emissions had it in place years earlier. It looks like a little barrel in the manifold, right behind the cooling fan.

now that you mention it I do remember seeing that in my car. So does that in anyway affect performance? I'm guessing it won't really.

You could always do a Car Fax search to see in what state it was first sold.
At least you got here AFTER that "Smog Impact Fee" non sense has been stopped [via class action law suit by the public]. That would have cost you $300.00 right off the bat. It was a phony [and illegal] attempt to fatten the state's general fund and did NOTHING to alleviate smog. And they ripped of newcomers to the state for YEARS with that crap. CA is a horribly greedy state when it comes to taking other people's money.
Contact your Saturn dealer and have them run a check, they may have that info in the data base as well.

The information is ON THE CAR. Open the hood, on the upper radiator support there is a HUGE sticker that says "Saturn POwer Module" on it. Look for the EMISSIONS protion of that label. (Upper left hand corner if memory serves)
