Default I need the masters of the Saturn's forms assistance. 99 sl2 stuck in 2nd gear

So I was on my way to pick up a buddy of mine and stopped to pay a toll. Suddenly out of nowhere I noticed that there was an extreme amount if play between first and second gear and the shifter was pretty much just sliding between the two. I then proceeded to notice that I was stuck in 2nd gear and is unable to slide across to third or forth. The clutch is working fine because I was able to limp it home in second. Not a fun trip I might add. What on earth could this be? Is this the death of my sl2?

Check your shifter bushings under the center console and check the cables on top of the transmission..something might be bound up or the bushing could fail...very common on s-series 5speeds.

If it is not a bushing at either end of the cables then the shift selector at the transmission is worn out. Get 1 that works from a low mileage car, 1 size fits all 91-02. You should be able to select all gears by manipulating the 2 levers on the transmission. If it is jammed in 2nd then it is toast.

Is it a hard fix? I don't have a lift, am I going to need to take it to a shop?

Nope, just pull the center console tunnel plastic and have a look.

If it's just a bushing it's a pretty simple fix, just take apart the center console and install a new bushing.. If you've managed to fray or shear the cable it's a little more involved but still manageable. You will need to get under the car if this is the case though.

If a shifter bushing has failed, you can temporarily hold the cables with a cable-tie.

And if you need a new bushing, get this stainless steel one and follow the directions.

I would recommend the delrin bushing -- much easier and still very solid.

Ok. I just wanted to take a second and thank everyone who has responded thus far. You've all been a huge help and have probably saved me a ton of money. I really appreciate it.

Back to business though.

I took if the center consol and found out that it was the bushing that had failed. (Awwww yeahhh)

Is this a part I absolutely need to order online or would an auto parts store possibly stock one? Also, is there a way I can jerry rig this for the time being so that I'm not out of a car?

At least that's a lot easier to fix than a busted cable. Temporarily, you can use some zip ties to hold the cable end eyelet onto the shifter until you get new parts. Keep some extras in the car just in case. And go easy on shifting in the interim.

On the plus side, you were in second gear. First gear is a killer and I had to get towed since I was 30 miles from home when I split a cable. AAA Plus was a big help that time. Have also done it in third.

Lightly hold the cable loop onto the ball and shrads of bushing with a couple of tie wraps. There are lots of fixes for this that have their cheerleaders. Most are effective to some level or another but this one is the one that seems to function the best if you can follow directions to the letter. http://www.ebay.com/itm/111455651557 Oder it today and you will have it Fri or Sat USPS priority and you get real customer support.

you can grab this one for toyota wipers that works fine, or this two piece set up that's meant to work for this exact application. The Toyota bushing has a better overall reputation as a longer term solution. Zip ties are apparently a capable short term solution as others have said. I bought the 2 piece dorman and ordered a good delrin bushing online for when the dorman one fails.

I put these delrin busings into all my manual cars before the stock one fails:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1991-02-Satu...10bd95&vxp=mtr

12 bucks, pop them in and done. Stainless is overkill (and more expensive/more of a pain to install) IMHO.

For a picture of the zip tie fix, click the link in post 7 that Sid posted.

also, (OldNuc tip) get a bit of powdered motor mica. Put it inside the cable loop and on the bushing, and put some at the transmission end of the cable loops, too. will make it very smooth shifting.

I'm at 7+ years and approximately 45,000 miles using the Toyota wiper bushing. I ordered the Delrin right after putting it in, but decided it's not worth ripping the "temporary" one off, and might put more strain on the end loop of the cable.
