2004 VUE Red Line
Default black emblems

We all know about the black emblems that Saturn sells. Does anyone know if there is a black one that replaces the red one in the steering wheel, or know of a way to change the color of it?

Unfortunately, you can't. The emblem is integrated into the airbag assembly - removing it would most likely leave a gaping hole where it was.
Even the square, metal emblems used on the 2 spoke wheels like I have can't be removed.

the steering emblem would require the require the disassembly of the airbag. The emblem has metal tabs that fold behind the airbag cover.

I see DJ has this covered....I type too slow

What's the big deal taking the cover off? You are not messing with the air bag itself. It's just a plastic cover. Air bags don't accidentally go off unless you somehow abuse them or short the wiring. You aren't doing either by removing the part of the steering wheel that covers the air bag.

The way those units are made, a large hold is left in the cover by removing the emblem - plus the emblem is tied into the plastic that creates the membrane switches that make the horn work.
Can it be removed: yes. Can it be removed without bending it: no. Let's say this... I've been thumped by 2 airbags in my life - I'm not afraid of them, but I wouldn't want to mess with it too much... God forbid it fling that emblem off when it deploys... that alone could kill someone.

If you're that desperate, paint it. You can do it with a paint pen or spray paint. I spray painted my exterior emblems and they look just as good as the ones you buy at the dealer, and I've seen exterior emblems that were done with a paint pen that looked pretty good.

I figured it was integrated, just making sure. I just think it would be cool for Saturn to make a replacement one, or replacement cover with a black emblem, like the ones you can buy, so they all match
