Default 97 sl1 starting issues

So ever since I bought this Saturn its had starting issues when its warm. It always starts on the third try. The first few tries it acts like its not getting gas, could this be the fuel pump, if so do I have to drop the tank to replace it?

Are you aware of the faulty pump check valve allowing pressure bleed off when the pump stops? Search the posts about '97's and the simple start up procedures.

^^^^ +1. Think of it like a diesel. Turn the key to RUN and wait. More like 5 seconds rather than 10. Then hit START.

"Borrow" a FP tester from your FLAPS. It's a REALLY good bet you'll find that the pressure looks good with key on and drops right off with key off. I put up with this crap for a year and finally had ENOUGH. Replaced the pump and it was one of the best things I've done!

Yes, you have to drop the tank. Not a lot of fun in August (when I did mine last year) but, not that big a deal. One strap bolt was a PITA though! ShaunV posted an excellent how-to on the procedure.

Not cheap. I paid $194 for one but it was well worth it IMHO!

Check rockauto.com and be sure to use the latest "how did you hear about us" code for another 5% off.
