Dizzy wont crank when hot unless jumped

My saturn l300 v6 wont crank when it gets warmed up in the summer. After you let it cool down for about 15 minutes or longer it will crank and start just fine. I have tried two batteries and have cleaned connections. This seems like a typical starter failure except for the the fact that it can be jumped. i know a battery reads 12.5 and a running engine reads about 14. could those extra amps be enough extra power to make the dying starter work?

REWARD EXCELLENCE!

Welcome to SaturnFans!!

This type of starting issue is always about working from the simple to the complex. The first thing you should have verified is the condition of the battery. If it is weakening and can no longer hold an adequate load required for starting a car then the battery must be replaced. If the same starting issue exists with a known, confirmed good battery and your connections are clean then it is most likely that the starter is failing. Alternator output has little to no effect on the operation of the starter itself. It is possible for a jump start to assist when a starter is going bad, but that situation will not long endure. Eventually, a jump start will not overcome the additional resistance within the starter.
