Sad 97 SL1 New to Saturns - Broken Shifter Linkage And Don't Know How To Fix. Need Help

Was driving along fine and all of a sudden my shifter gave way, it wouldn't shift at all, but I was stuck in first gear. The shifter moves back and forth like there's nothing there. It will not go side to side. I have no idea what it could be, as I've heard so many different things. Could someone please lend me some advice on what it is and how can fix it? Thank you. ..

Hi James, a 5-speed I take it??

If so, a shifter bushing is most likely the culprit. It's not too hard to replace.

Get one from the Saturnbushingman on eBay for $19.99.

Here's a video on how to replace it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AI3h7uSTvAI

If it is indeed the shifter bushing, you can use a few strategically placed zip ties to hold the cable end loop to the ball and drive the car while you wait for the bushing to arrive.

Dorman also makes a replacement bushing (though it's also made of cheesy plastic like the original) and your local auto parts store might have it in stock and save you a few days wait.

Sad Re: 97 SL1 New to Saturns - Broken Shifter Linkage And Don't Know How To Fix. Need H

I watched the video that I was sent the link to, but I'm still a little weary about performing this on my own. I've never really been mechanically inclined. However, I noticed that in the video, there is an arm right next to the one with the bushing. I'm assuming that's the linkage? See, my shifter wobbles front to back like a limp noodle. But it will not move side to side, thus not going into any other gear besides the one that it's stuck in, which is 1st gear. Judging by the way it feels, maybe a linkage issue? I suppose it's hard to diagnose without actually looking. Ugh I'm so frustrated! LoL

It will not move side to side when in any gear. Take up the center console and lightly tie wrap to the ball on the right hand cable. Then it will shift. You will need one of these to fix it permantly. http://www.ebay.com/usr/saturnbushin...88.m1543.l2754 Either plastic or stainless steel. I would suggest the 20.00 plastic one.

+1 on the plastic bushing. It is easier to install and lasts a long time.
