Default Why is my 01 sl2 getting such low mpg?

I have a 2001 sl2 manual with about 174k on it. when I originally bought this car a year ago it was getting about 37 mpg. Currently as of right now after doing the math it's getting 34.6 mpg. I had a 02 sl2 automatic that was getting better than that and I had a 99 Sl2 manual with over 200k that was getting about 42 mpg. What could be causing this loss in miles per gallon? I mean the front tires on this car are kind of worn but it just passed inspection. The car has no check engine lights and for the most part runs like a clock. I don't drive it hard and do my best to keep the tachometer to 2k when I shift it. Burns about a quart and a half every 5k when I change the oil (conventional).

Is there a way to diagnose what's going on and if so is there an easy fix? any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

REWARD EXCELLENCE!

If you have a reader/scanner, use it and record warm engine data at idle rpm. Post what you record. Image files cannot be larger than 150kb for attachment here. All digital cameras and cell phones create large megabyte image files so they will not be accepted unless you resize them. Use any image software to reduce file size to less than one megabyte and convert to jpeg if possible for easy attachment to posts.

1-perform a compression test, dry and wet (some oil squirted into each cylinder. 185psi is the go/no go line.

2-does the car roll easily in neutral after accelerating in first gear? (brakes not grabbing?)

A few MPG at that level can also be a few easy things.....

- Same Gas Station? Different Ethanol blend?

- Due for new (NGK) Spark Plugs? Deterioration after 20k...

- Air Filter? PCV?

- Air Pressure in Tires?

- Due for for Techron/Amsoil PI/Redline SI-1 in a tank of gas?

Check/try those & report back.

cold weather, alignment, tire pressure, leaking thermostat, slow O2 response, slight changes in how you drive or route taken, etc., lots of things can affect MPG without throwing a code
