Default 94 SL2 radiator cooling fan not running.

I just got this car running today. Needed a starter, and a bunch more work. But anyways the car has a small knock coming from inside the valve cover, but only when you rev it from idling, and when you crank it. Anyways thats besides the point because i'm pretty sure its just the tensioner on the timing chain is bad and making the timing chain loose at low rpm's. So the radiator fan never comes on. Ive never let it run long enough to go all the way to the "H" on the temp gauge, but i'm sure if i left it running it would get there... Also the AC compressor never comes on. i have a feeling there is some relation.

Your '94 is 16yrs old with some well used parts. Some of them may the original cooling fan that may be worn out (brushes) and the original engine coolant temperature sensor (ECTS) if it wasn't replaced. Without mentioning replacing the ects, replace it if yours is still the original one as it won't allow the cooling fan to turn on but will let the engine overheat.

I like to suggest the 'scream test'; if the cooling fan doesn't scream when powered up, either directly wired to the battery or jumpering the fan relay socket pins 30 and 87 together, and runs with a mediocre sound, replace it. There are enough posts on these forums of models overheating and cutting out the a/c cooling because of worn out cooling fans that the 'scream test' fits the description of a good fan as oposed to a worn out one not screaming. In the sun belt states, owners wear out their cooling fans sooner due to near constant use of a/c cooling.

Do not confuse the fan not turning on with the a/c. If the a/c is DEAD as in not hearing/seeing the clutch on the compressor engage, the a/c has most likely lost refrigerant. Lose enough refrigerant and a pressure switch disables the compressor from running. The ecm/pcm will detect this and simultaneously disable the cooling fan; if the a/c doesn't run then there is no reason to turn on the fan. The a/c system must be in good working order before the fan is turned on to cool off the condenser coil and radiator. With no operating a/c system the cooling fan is only needed to cool off the radiator when coolant reaches temps requiring the fan. An operating a/c system requires constant cooling. Most if not all car a/c systems turn on their cooling fan(s) IF the a/c system works. DEAD a/c = no fan needed.

Agree. Check the ECTS, replace if the old type, and check the connector for corrosion. The originals fail over time and can cause all sorts of driveability issue when they do.

And ou can check the fan for full power as noted above.

On the '94, with a dead A/C, the fan will not come on until the temp gauge passes 3/4 scale, just before going into the red zone. (Note that up through '95 the temp gauge did not depend on the ECTS, it had a separate sensor.)
