1992 SL2
Default I still think this car was a good deal...

'92 SL2 5sp.
Paid $500 for it in July.
I just found this group of fine folks so pardon my ignorance about these cars..I have never been a gear-head. I'm a bit of an expert on Texas snakes, but I'm a newbie in mechanical knowledge.
So far I've managed to get the AC running cool instead of hot (was a fuse), replaced the PCV? hose that was taped together, and replaced anther fuse which got the hazards flashing, got a new coolant reservoir cap to replace the obviously junked cap, and changed her oil. Here's what I know's wrong.
1.The air cleaner intake that runs atop the radiator isn't attached to the airbox as it should be. It is ziptied.
2. The sensor atop the AC compressor has 1 pin but the connector has two receptors.
3.There is a canister under the clutch filler reservoir on looks like a fuel line that dangles below a circular bracket it looks like it should be in.
4. Coolant boiled thru the failed cap and warped the reservoir (hard to get the new lid to stay flush closed)
5. The fuel injectors appear very dirty and so does the starter and everything else underneath them
5. Cruise control not functional. Speedo, odo and trip are lifeless . Fuel gauge bounces around alot but appears to give a vague indication of fuel. Tach did work, now doesnt.
6.Clutch seems to be going out. Struggled to get up to speed and if uphill forgot it. 7.Clutch pedal now tough to push down and doesnt spring back. Seems not to engage fully. The shifter nob wiggles about in its place.
8.SES light came on occasionally on the highway but hasn't in a couple weeks.
9.lots of things are loose.the interior trim installation tabs are mostly snapped.
The IP and dash mount tabs/brackets broken. took the saggy headliner out.
10. Window console switch box needs replaced.

Thought the fuel pump went out but was a couple fuses instead. Is there any hope?
Is there anything adjustable along the clutch to encourage it to catch n hold just a couple more weeks? Did I make I buy?
Inspection expires this month 🙄
Is it worth fighting for? I kinda like it. But don't/can't put another 500 into it right now, honestly, and im dependent on it for running my startup company ..

Happily to have found you here. what a great resource. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Message me any questions about US native snakes and I'll be able to give back a little

You say: a rattlesnake is incapable of being mean or evil. Those are qualities only found in humans.

However, the Lord God said of all snakes:

Genesis 3:1-5 King James Version (KJV)
3 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?

Vs 14: 14 And the Lord God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:

Back to cars, a few pictures would help the peanut gallery here understand some of the issues. If the car isn't rusted, everything else can be fixed.

Should have known comments like that would occur. "He" must love them. Nearly 3000 species and the 2nd most adaptable creature in the world.. but lets keep religion out of this thread if ya dont mind.

I'll upload some pics to my Flickr and post them here.

As stated - if the underbody is solid - it's probably worth fixing.

I'd be tickled to get a solid underbody - that runs...

Default Re: I still think this car was a good deal...

I purchased my 1995 SC2 for $215, in a police impound auction. Took me about $2,800 to make it "roadworthy", and by far this car has been the best investment I have made in terms of cars.

I get top-notch fuel economy, plastic body without rust, pop-up head lights, automatic transmission, an aftermarket sunroof.

The only major issue with these cars is oil consumption.

My first one was a 95 SC2 (red, manual)

Paid $3500.

But was only 5 years old with 60k miles.

Sold last year. Terminal car cancer....

. . . and rust. OMG, so much rust

Actually, previous owners' "fixes" and "upgrades" can be a serious issue, too. I fixed most of the major issues on my SC2 by removing the PO's "upgrades"

Three signs I look for (besides underbody rust) I look for. when passing on the purchase of a car.

1. On manuals - if the welds on the front upper strut mount is fractured seriously -it means the PO pounded the snot out of it - and wheel hopped it - alot.

2. "Custom" air intakes. Same reason as #1. A junior race car driver wannabe..

3. Bigassed stereo. One that takes up the trunk AND the back seat. Same reason as #1 - except then the genius didn't hear the rattling when stuff broke.

Good calls

Pulled off the CAI with cone filter and larger throttle body, replaced with stock parts, no more high idle.

PO had already removed his amp and speakers. Stereo was left sort of hanging loosely in the spot.

I replaced his stereo with a proper Metra pocket kit, pulled and replaced the front wiring harness that he had tapped for something (amp?) - got my high beams back and the overnight battery drain stopped.
