Question Coolant Leak on Passenger Side - Water Pump?

I have a 1995 SC1 with over 180,000 miles on it. The engine has about 60,000 miles less (it was replaced before I bought it).

Recently, I had a low coolant light come on after driving 85+ miles home. Took more than a quart of coolant, and I had topped it up just a week before.

Parked it on the car port, and just a few minutes of idling will show a leak on the passenger side -- it drips off the front and back of the sub-frame below the engine. It looks like some is spraying off the serpentine belt.

Doesn't appear to be anything coming from either end of the radiator, or the hoses or thermostat housing.

I'm thinking the water pump may have given way, but it is hard to tell -- difficult to see that side of the engine.

Thoughts?

Water thrown by serpentine belt = water pump leak. Replace that sucker.

Take the PS wheel off, remove the two lower splash shields to gain easy access to the pump. Make sure to get the mating surface very clean (I use a razor blade).

If the belt is old, replace that while you're down there, since it's much easier with the splash shields removed.

Cheers

Got it up on jacks and took the wheel and splash guards off. Got the pulley off the water pump and it was pretty obvious -- even not running, coolant is dripping out of the shaft.

I'll grab one tomorrow from the parts place.

Don't use a razor blade or any metal scraper as you may accidentally nick the aluminum mating surface. Use a plastic scraper for the heavy stuff and then a green scuff pad for the rest of the residue. Much more of a pain but much safer outcome. Get it all nice and shiny before reassembly. Do not overtorque the bolts. Not a bad idea to use all new universal antifreeze when you refill the system. Good luck

"Spray off the serpentine belt." Was down a cup after every 50 miles.

I had that but it was the coolant bottle itself leaking. Replaced with a good JY and problem disappeared.

If getting an used coolant bottle make sure when you shake to see if it rattles. If it don't it's no good.

I am a SUPER NOOB. I just bought a 98 S-series Wagon today and got it home and noticed the same thing, coolant leaking on the passenger side... I looked under the hood and didnt notice any leaks out of the hoses or any notice of leaks or spray...

Any thoughts? Thanks!! Kurtis

You need to check the water pump behind the pulley. Either from underneath or take off passenger side front wheel and then the plastic panels.
