Default Engine/transmission software available?

The transmission of my 2007 6-cyclinder Vue (Honda engine) is shifting strangely. At 30 mph with no load on the engine, the transmission will occasionally shift into too high of a gear, dropping the rpm to 1100 and setting up a rapid vibration. Pressing the gas pedal to increase speed a little causes it to shift back to the correct gear and the tach now is at 2000 rpm and the vibration is gone.

Likewise at 50 mph, the transmission upshifts to a too-high gear and the engine drops to 1000 rpm. A low-frquency loud rumble also comes from the engine/transmission until the speed gets to 65 mph, or until the transmission shifts to the appropriate lower gear, like when the car stars up a hill. After downshifting, the rumble disappears and the tach runs about 2200 rpm

My local transmission specialist doesn't think the torque converter is bad, but believes it's the computer software causing the tranny to shift up at inappropriate times. But he's unaware where he can get the correct Saturn softwear.

Assuming he's right, where might I get the necessary software for the car's computer? Will software from a 2007 Chevy Equinox with similar engine/tranny work in the Saturn?

...

Go to a different place. A good mechanic would know where to get it and how to get it in your car. You also can go to a dealership and see if your Vue already has the lastest calibration, but they will charge you a couple hundred bucks for this.

No, the Equinox uses a completely different engine (Chevy 3400 V6) & transmission (Aisin AF33).

Default Driving with a defective torque converter?

Hey Ruley73,
Thanks for the advice to seek out a different transmission shop. I did, and they had access to the software.

After changing the transmission fluid and putting in an anti-shudder additive, the shop downloaded the software and flashed the computer module with the correct software–for a charge of $75.

All of that–and a $275 bill–changed nothing in how the tranny performs. It still upshifts inappropriately at 30 and 50 mph.

Does this mean that I need to replace the torque converter if I want like-new factory performance?

Would I be damaging anything if I continued to drive the car without changing the torque converter and just accepting the inappropriate shifting? I can live with the minor shifting annoyance.

The car has 150K so I probably will only be driving it for another 50K. Will it last that long with a defective torque converter?

Software never goes bad. If something went wrong it isn’t software. There was a recall on the torque converter for locking up similar to how you describe.

There was a recall for replacing the torque converter at no cost–even for cars out of warranty–but the program ended in 2015.

Yes the 3.5L V-6 and 5 speed upshift to the highest gear for fuel economy when their is not a need to be in a lower gear for adequate power.

You can call the any gm dealer, best a Saturn service provider. Give then your 17 digit VIN, phone number for call back if their busy and ask if the 10285 recall was completed. If recall was completed repair history will show 1 of the following labor operation code: V2386, V2387, T5808 .

If this Vue is new to you be aware that it shifts at much low RPM than a Vue with a 2.2L

So if the transmission is shifting correctly is the engine running good, any codes?

2 out of the 4 3.5's I've had have done this. 40-50 mph was real annoying. Never found a fix, just lived with it. A fluid change made it a little better though. My current one is just the opposite. It upshifts later than I like, mostly in the lower gears. Sometimes not until 2800-3000 rpm when lightly touching the gas.

Default Re: transmission torque converter recall

Bern,
I'm taking your information to my local GM dealer to see if anything along those lines has been done to the car. I've had the car only for the last 8 months, but I do recall something in the vehicle's CarFax from a now-closed Saturn dealer. They noted the car was shifting strangely and the torque converter might have to be replaced. There was no indication that they had replaced the torque converter.

The question remains though, can I keep driving the car and just live with the strange shifting?

Also be aware:
1)This trans work well with the wrong trans transmission fluid. you be using only Honda transmission fluid for this Honda transmission. Z1 or DW1 , don't add any snake oil!

2) An engine that runs rough or has misfires at low RPM may feel like a transmission concern. check for DTCs P0300, P0301-P0306. If you have this concern or for maintenance,
Replace spark plugs with OEM plugs.

(Denso Iridium SKJ16DR-11 / GM 12582002 / Carquest 3422 )

Also adjust valves at the same time.
parts: upper plenum gaskets 3 pieces kit available (not lower intake),
valve cover gaskets.

clean throttle valve . clean EGR ports when plenum is off.

3) The engine or trans mounts may be worn. This will a very rough engine feeling as felt in the vehicle body Inspect the engines front mount. Look down behind the engine air filter box, inspect the mount top rearward area behind the rubber flap for grounding (metal on metal)
