Another battery voltage update. My brother has a newish battery from a 2002 we stripped out for parts. His battery voltage after sitting overnight in 26 degree weather was 12.3v. I'm not worried my battery is taking a dump. My car sat 2 days and had the same voltage. Plus the battery voltage-temp chart kind of lines up with what I'm seeing.

That is the expected voltage for time and temp with the nominal parasitic load that is on every modern car. If you use the Optima yellow top it would be 12.5 or so as they run a higher terminal voltage.

Started using the water injection again. It's set up to use 1 gallon per tank of fuel.

I am curious. What benefit do you get from water injection? I know it is used for boosted engines for anti-knock and increased mass flow.

Same benefits but on a 100hp engine. I use the -20 degree blue windshield wash fluid from Walmart. It also helps keep the intake and combustion chambers clean.

I did this to my 96 that used a qt of oil every 1000 miles. It had so much carbon in the combustion chambers I'd have a cold knock at a cold startup that sounded like a rod was about to smack someone in the back of the head.

I've also seen a minor mpg benefit.

Well, I have a scraping noise that goes away turning right. Guess it's time to replace the steering knuckle. I have a spare already loaded with a fresh wheel bearing. I'm in no hurry, other than getting it done by Sunday night when I go back to work.

So I pulled the front drivers side apart and my 5 year old rotors are pop corn rusting from the outside edge into the brake pad area around 1/4". That rust was scraping one of the metal tabs on the stainless steel inserts the pads slide on. So new pads and coated rotors. Also retorqued the half shaft bolt.

I also seen this rust above the drivers trailing arm. This summer I'll fix it. A few of my friends lost their saturns to this rust at the trailing arm mounts.

Do you know if I can cut a good drag link mount area out of a 96-98 and use it to repair my 2002? My friend has my old 96 and a 97 that may have good drivers side areas.

I'm going to say 1-2mpg which means nothing with how much driving conditions change. I do know that when I use it my ScanGauge mpg is off to the low side. Same when I use acetone. I get a little better than the ScanGauge predected fillup.

It's hard to beat that kind of MPG return.

I've tried a few times when traffic was light to upshift that early. I just can't bring myself to do it. I think I'd get run over trying it during my normal commute.

I'll admit it's not a strait up tank of gas. 4oz of acetone plus my -20f windshield washer fluid water injection. But, those are minor improvers.

A big torque improver for me was the steel core ignition wires (mag core?) and the dual electrode plugs. On a flat road in 5th at 30-35mph I have no problem keeping up with traffic. My speed limits are either 45-50-55 (depending on which non town rural road. Or 25-35mph depending on which town I'm driving through. Having the spark tables throwing 34 degrees advance at it helps too IMO.

Default Re: 1996SL11.9L's 2002 SL1

I've been having the dredded cam sensor code (340) and once a missfire on cylinder 4.

So, yesterday I pulled the plug wire and measured its resistance. Yea, a effing open resistance. All those pulling the boot off and re-crimping the plug end back on must have wrecked it.

Got another set of mag core suppression wires. My old ones were Bosch with a lifetime warranty. So I got the Duracrap Gold in the exchange. (Autozone no longer carries Bosch).

Plugs looked decent for 2 heat ranges colder. 4 plug was dirty. But that's expected with my water injection nozzle located around that cylinder in the intake plenum. I swapped 3 and 4 plug to clean it up.

Shining a light in the plug holes I see aluminum on the Pistons. Center of Pistons have minor carbon buildup. Not *****ing about that with 180,000 miles on engine.

Next is dealing with the rear lower suspension strut rod rust at frame on drivers side.
