Default 99 SL2 won't read CDs

Hey everyone, long time no see.

I'm having an interesting issue with the CD player in my Homecoming SL2. Especially on chilly mornings, it won't read CDs. I put one in, it thinks about it for a few seconds, then ejects it with the message "ERR" displayed. It doesn't click or anything that would make me believe it's out of balance but I've noticed when it does this it leaves scratches on my CDs. Once it ejects the CD once, there's pretty much no hope of getting it to work that day. Then there are other times that it works perfectly fine!
This is the factory single CD player with equalizer. Is there any hope for it other than replacing it?

I fixed that problem with my 97SW2 by using a CD cleaning disk I bought at Best Buy. That was a least three years ago and it has worked fine ever since.

i second that. try this first, i just had 2 cars with cd players not working. actually, one worked before i took it to my paint guy, and after i got it back it didn't work... to much dust in the car. memorex cd lens cleaner fixed both of them, now work flawlessly.

most people already have one of these discs laying around, if not, its good to have and they are pretty cheap, $10 i think? if this doesn't work just pull one from the junkyard, should be like $20 max.

I purchased an OEM CD player with EQ from ebay and it didn't play CD's at all. It displayed the "err" message then ejected the CD. I bought one of those cleaning CD's and it didn't work. As a last resort, I popped off the top cover and cleaned the optical reader with a Q-tip and isopropyl alcohol. That did the trick. That was almost two years ago and it's still going strong. I haven't had that problem since.

That's your opinion. There are others who would disagree with you, myself included.

I prefer the look of the factory radio but if I needed to replace it, I'd go aftermarket only so I could have more features such as an aux input for my iPod, built-in XM (as opposed to the portable unit I have now) and mp3 CD capabilities.

I will give a cleaning CD a try. I'm sure I have one somewhere but who knows where. Hopefully I can snag a cheap one somewhere!

They make dual-DIN kits for the second gen interiors now. So you have a lot more options. And with some of the aftermarket units out there, it can look more OEM than what actually came with the car.
