Default Guaging Interest: Wrecked '97 SL2 w/ 35k miles IL

My folks bought a '97 SL2 from an elderly lady about 2 months ago with only 34k miles on it. Last week an uninsured, unlicensced driver turned directly in front of my mom while driving the car. She hit him with the front of the car on his passenger side. The front clip, hood, and front fenders are all bad. The air bags went off and the sun roof popped open. The insurance company has totaled the car out. I am thinking about trying to part it out because it would cost too much to fix. The car was like brand new before the accident and it is a shame to waste so many good parts. Does anyone have any interest in parts off of this car? The engine and trans were both rock solid. I am located in North Aurora, Illinos 60542. The car was a dark grey in color. Let me know if anyone is interested in any parts off of the car (or the whole car), we should be getting it back within a week or two. Thanks.

My mom's 8-year old 1995 Olds was totalled. It had only 40K miles (it was my grandmother's car). Since it had low mileage we got a big premium from insurance, something like $3,000 over normal value. Got about $8,000 for the car, and turned around and got a 2002 L200, 19K miles, 11 months old, for $10,000.

We thought about buying the car back from insurance for about $1,500. They claimed it had frame damage, but we thinked it was just cosmetic stuff. We elected to take our money and run. Someone did get the car, fixed it, and put it back on the road (they called Dad asking for another key).

Did she have uninsured coverage? If so I'd let insurance take it. Or are you stuck with the car? If so, parting it out is the best choice. I'm sure someone will want the powertrain. I see lots of wrecked cars on ebay. You may try there.

M.Nguyen, which car are you swapping the transmissions from? the '93 or '97? How many miles are on the transmission? Are you interested in selling me the transmission and hardware *including pedals, shifter, blah blah blah*

I have pics taken the day after the accident. I can email them to anyone interested, just ask. The car is currently stored in a lot by the insurance company. We are not sure when we will receive the car back (within a couple weeks probably). The car has alloy wheels. The tires are in great shape. The car has an automatic transmission. It does have a factory CD player. Everything was in working order before the accident. It starts fine and runs fine but the radiator is damaged. I am relaying information back to my father since the car belongs to him, so I apologize for the delay in responses. He would prefer to sell the car whole to someone as we are not mechanics and tearing it apart in the driveway would be a hastle (and an eye-sore to the neighborhood). I will be happy to field any other questions and I will put up a post as soon as the car is back in our possession. Thanks to everyone interested.

Ok, so there seems to be lots of interest in parts from everyone. One of the headlights appears to be good still. I'd have to try it out once we get the car to say for sure though. Both seat belts appear to be good. I'll have to see just how bad this car is when we get it from the insurance. It really might not be that bad of a fixer-upper (with the exception of the air bags). We'll talk prices for stuff once we get the car back. I will keep everyone posted.

Hi Everybody

I'm Mikes dad. I will be talking with my insurance company one day this week to see when they can bring my car back. This car had all options except leather, rear spoiler and anti-loc brakes. Everythink was like new until 10 days ago. Doesn't look taoaled to see it but when the air bags are blown thats it. Over $3,000 plus for insurance to replace air bags and all related parts. I don't know how to post pics so if you need any we can e-mail them.

Thanks for the interest and be patient. I don't know how long they will take to bring the car back. I'll let you know and then we'll start selling parts. It would be best to sell the whole car but whatever we have to do.

~Jim
