Happy Cutting ION Shifter

Okay,

I recently chopped my shifter like the rest of the people out there. And i'm going to write a little something on how-to do it. Okay First off this is what you need:

1) Aftermarket Shift knob that has 3 screws on the side (I.e MOMO)
2) Metal Hose Clamp
3) Hack Saw
4) Time
5) Strong Arms

Okay well first off you need to take off your current boot + Knob to do this you will need to do this

This is how i did it on my ION-1

Okay now you got your boot + knob off. Now you gotta look at the big rod (haha.. rod) and look how its thin on the top but gets thick on the bottom. So what i did was cut off the thin part (about 1 - 1.5" long)

Image:

Then follow the picture before on how to put the knob + boot on..

Have fun!!!

Yeah i found out the hard way about how hot the rod gets. I used a Sawz-all with i metal cutting blade. Ended up cutting it 4 different times and when i went to pick up the first piece, it stuck to mu thumb and continued burning. I really needed this picture last week though. I had a hell of a time figuring out how to re-use the stock knob. I ended up going with a B&M know and cut off 21/2 inches.

is there a reverse lockout on the regular 5sp ions?

im wondering because im thinking of doing this to my redline, but don't want to ***** up the lockout, or don't even know if it would work anyway

Question Re: Cutting ION Shifter

May be a silly question, but has anyone tried this on the QC with the Auto Tranmission? I know it doesnt make a difference in performance, but just as an asthetics thing to make the knob sit a little closer to the console...

I must say, doesn't seem that complex, and should be significantly cheaper than buying a short shift. So what is the status of putting a knob on the now "fat" portion of the rod? I'm assuming you can't put the stock one back on and only certain aftermarkets will fit... How do i know if the aftermarket I'm looking at is going to work?

I test drove the Ion 2 and the Redline before getting my Ion 2. The redline has a reverse lockout, but the Ion 2 uses either a rev or speed detection for the reverse "lockout" (you can't shift into reverse above a certain speed/rpm, ie: 55mph)

Just so I'm not misunderstood (whether you were being sarcastic or not)... I meant it in the way that you can't even put the shifter in the reverse position... so the possibility, you are right, does not exist - but not because of the physics (well those physics anyway)
