Default Parking Brake Control Replacement

My parking brake control has failed. It appears that the ratchet assembly is stripped. I've been looking for the replacement for it, but I keep coming up with the dreaded "this part is no longer available" when I go to the various GM sources.

So I've been thinking, would a parking brake control for a Cobalt work for an 2005 Ion 1? Apparently GM is still making these. I've done a little bit of looking and GM doesn't say that it won't but do say that it fits like 30 different Chevy and Pontiac models. Plus the prices I've seen for it are pretty reasonable compared to the "universal replacement" controls that are out there. Those are all around a hundred bucks.

Any thoughts?

The part number for the Ion is 21992534 and is discontinued. However, there is still an eBay listing for a new one.

The part number for the Cobalt/G5 is 25999926. It appears to be quite different from the Saturn Ion part when you look at the diagrams side-by-side.

I found the eBay listing. I had previously been on this sellers website, where they claim the part is no longer available for sale. What I find somewhat disturbing is that by Federal law GM is supposed to supply replacement parts for these cars for ten years after the last model was made. The fact that they shut down the division has nothing to do with it, GM itself is still in business. That means that I should be able to go to my local Chevy dealer and order,if not pick up a new part up through 2017. Now are they hoarding a supply for their repair business, not to be sold to the car owners unless the dealer installs them?

This is a myth. Manufacturers are only required to ensure part availability during the warranty period to comply with the Magnuson–Moss Warranty Act. Obviously, any factory warranty that came with a 2007 Ion has been expired for a few years.

not exactly, the GM went bankrupt (for good reasons). the current company is a new entity that acquired the name, assets, and employees, but not all liabilities.
