Default Ticking noise when first started?

Does the Saturn ION tend to make a ticking noise when it's first started (cold engine)?

I don't think this is normal . The only time my car did this was when I had a very weak battery(went to Thailand for 2 weeks in the dead of winter in January and no one warmed up my car while I was gone) . My battery was on its last juice and the alternator made a ticking sound prior to starting. Sorry I couldn't help much hopefully one of the guys on the forum can answer. Is the car running while ticking ? Or prior to turning the key over?

No, this is not battery related. The ticking noise happens at startup and lasts for about 10 seconds. It's definitely coming from the engine. It tends to happen more often in the morning when the engine is cold.

Oil level is good. Not sure on the grade. AAA car care center handles the oil changes.

When was the last change? if you can, contact them to see what grade oil they put in, or next time you go, make sure they are putting 5W30. Ions are not too happy with anything else.

Yes, find out what grade oil they used. A lot of places use 10w40, especially if they are running a oil change special.

Thanks for the tip about the oil. I didn't know a heavier weight would have that kind of effect.

I just wanted to post a followup for others who may be experiencing the same problem. It turns out the ticking noise was actually an exhaust leak. For a car that's 10 years old, that's not surprising.

glad its that and not something regarding the oil lol

The exhaust on the ions are relatively easy to replace, as its all pretty much bolt on.

cheapest is ebay, but you gotta be careful there as far as fitment.
if theres a salvage yard or pull apart nearby, you can check if there are any ions there, or if your lucky, ion redlines if you wanna add a bit of power with the larger exhaust.

Yes, my mechanic hates doing exhaust work for that very reason.

You're right. Had the ticking noise for a while and found out the nearside passenger gasket material had a leak. Replace with an auto parts store gasket, not something off eBay or you'll be looking at this job again. Also if you do the manifold to downpipe gasket again don't skimp, I had to do that one twice because of cheapo gasket failure. The bolts to get the manifold off are a PITA but it is doable driveway work, just mind your hands!

ill be having my share of exhaust work soon lol i ordered an upgraded exhaust. bought a 2.4 manifold, and a catback. had problems finding a downpipe bec of the flange bolt patern that connects to the tailpipe. the catback i ordered has the 3 both flange, found on 03-04 ions. 05-07 have 2 bolt flanged. could not, for the life of me, find an 04 redline downpipe, since it has the 3 bolt, so im stuck with the stock 03 sedan downpipe for the time being, unless i feel like ordering a new one with the 2 bolt, and chop it off to weld a 3 both to it. i have the tools, but lack the want tos lol
