Default Hi and l200 questions for you

Hello to the forum!
Anyway, I'm contemplating a 2001 l200 automatic purchase and have a few questions for you saturn experts.

1. what gas mileage is common to the 2.2 l200 series? I drive mostly highway, are there mods one can do to increase mileage?

2. What are the best practices for the l200 2.2? I've read all sorts of horror stories regarding timing chains and whatnot, what are the usual things to replace to improve longevity?

Thanks!

I get between 28 and 30 mpg, better in the summer. I bought this car with a broken chain at 130,000 miles. They seem to have fixed the chain problems by mid year 03 production. If you have the chains done before they break you don't have to pull out the head and replace all the bent valves. They seem to use oil after 200k miles.

Hmm, 28 to 30mpg huh. How much do these things weight? I was kinda expecting more than 30mpg but 30 is better than 24! Good on the chains, a fiasco but one that can be remedied. Thanks for the prompt response by the way.

Welcome!

I have an 2001 L200. I love the car. I don't see 28-30, but I do spend a fair bit of time in rush hour traffic doing 10-25 mph. So, I'm usually in the 26-28 MPG.

I am on the original timing chain and have no issues. The problem with the bad oilier for the timing chain was resolved by the early 01 model run. Not to say later chains didn't fail, but it was probably due to other circumstances. Just keep up with changing the oil when it needs it an you'll be fine. Most of us run either synthetic oil or a synthetic blend to help ensure the timing chain is well lubricated and the engine is kept happy.

I'm at 147K miles and don't have any oil consumption to speak of. The 4 cylinder engine is easy to work on and is very reliable when taken care of.

My 2002 model year car had the early oiler with the steel restrictor. It looked like it had never been apart. I know they repaired a lot of engines early on by recall.

2000 SL1
Default Re: Hi and l200 questions for you

I am new to this site, so don't know where to post,so here it goes. I have a 2000 SL1 , it was ticking a bit. Did motor flush, changed oil and filter & added marvels. Next day while driving home, the car just shut off. Oil light was flashing on and off right before. Tried starting a few times, it just clicked a bit then smoke near back off engine raising near fire wall. Sat for 3 days, tired to start today, it turned over twice..then nothing, any clues?

Welcome to SaturnFans, Blaky! I'll try to be concise.

Answers:

1) Original EPA estimates for my car were 23 MPG/city, 32 MPG/hwy and my fuel economy tends to reflect that general range. To the best of my knowledge those estimates remained the same for Saturn's L Series ECOTEC 2.2L engine through 2004. A/C use will reduce MPG typically by about 10%. I have had occasions where MPG was above 32 and sometimes below 23 depending on how optimal, or poor, the conditions were for highway or city driving. Mixed city and highway driving will give you MPG numbers somewhere between 23 and 32 depending on which type of driving the mix leans towards. I'm unaware of any mods which improve fuel economy being written of here in these forums.

2) I'm still driving on the original timing chain set up. According to GM, my engine had received the necessary corrections to the chain oiler, though I don't know about the tensioner. Nevertheless, I've eliminated a common timing chain rattle at start up by using HY-PER LUBE Oil Additive with each oil change for some years now. I'm finally seeing an oil leak at the front crankshaft seal. I may be replacing the timing chain simply because going after the seal is part of the same job (whenever I actually get to doing it) and at 258K miles as of this writing, I might as well play it safe. The best way to protect the timing chain is the same way to protect the engine generally: regular oil changes. I live in an area where it's recommended that I stay with a 3K mile oil change interval. It's worked out well thus far. Oil consumption is about one quart per 3K miles.

I have yet to replace the starter and alternator on this car. I replaced the rack and pinion unit last week. This car has been extremely reliable and inexpensive to maintain, but that's also because I can do most of the work myself. The transmission has been fine overall with just regular servicing every 50K miles.

...

Thanks for the info Pierrot, exactly what I was looking for. Shame there's no mpg mods out there.

Look on car-part.com. They list parts at wrecking yards sorted by zip codes. Near me they are between $35 and $100. FYI I bought a complete parts car with a bad engine for $100.

REPLACE THAT CHAIN also DONT DRIVE IT IN THE SNOW OR RIGHT AFTER a snowstorm unless you want to die in a ball of fire or see the car fall apart.
