Default Trunk noise, not the purge valve

Hey guys, recently I have been experiencing some noise coming from the trunk and was wondering if anyone ever had problems with play on the trunk? All the problems I have read here are about the purge valve knocking. Anyway I am asuming the noise (somewhat hollow and not very dependent on bumps) is due to the play that the trunk has. How do I get rid of the play?

Given that the lock is non-adjustable, I removed it and added some washers to it to try to lower it more into the trunk. Now it locks a little tighter but there is some play left(adding more washers prevented the trunk from locking). Does the Ion use the weather strip to lock the trunk in? By the way, one side of the trunk is touching the rear bumber not sure what that is about. The struts and shocks were replaced 30k miles ago.

Thanks in advance.

you lowered the locked position of the trunk lid on a car notorious for the trunk lid hitting the bumper cover. that's why it's touching the bumper cover.

never heard of the trunk lid having play and clunking, it almost has to be something loose in the trunk (spare and jack?) or a suspension clunk.

Well the lid seems to be not leveled or the bumper is bulging on one side so only one side of the lid is touching the bumber. This weekend I will remove the rear bumper to see why it is not leveled or bulging (maybe it got hit).

If the trunk lid is loose it should not make noises because of the two rubber stoppers and the weather strip? Is this why you beleive that there cannot be any noise coming from the lid?

I would not call the noise a clunck, more like hollow tapping or something like that. The shocks and one of the wheel bearrings were replace a while back, I tighten up the jack, tire, and battery and made sure that they do not move at all. I also removed everything from inside the trunk. What else on the rear suspension is notorious for making noises? As far as I know there are no sway bar end links back there.

Thanks.

Yes, it closes on the weather seal and those stoppers and that takes up the slack.

I have realized that there are two distinct noises coming from the back end. One is due to trunk slack and the other must be something related to suspension.
The reason why I say that is because yesterday I oscillated the car up and down using the hitch and the rear driver's side wheel was sort of bouncing (not the wheel itself just that side of the suspension). It was as the spring or something was binding for a moment then letting go causing an audible noise as well as a vibration that can be seen on the wheel. This could explain why this pitch of noise was only heard in really smooth roads where the road was somewhat wavy and not bumpy.
The strange thing is that after doing this for about 20 times trying to find the source it stopped doing it. So far it only does it while driving. What could be causing this? There is not a lot to the rear suspension of the ion.

I got a quote yesturday for the latch and the weather stripping and they are going to cost +100 each from the dealer. I could not find any of these online.
Anybody found an alternative at leas for the weather stripping? I would hate to have to spend +200 on things that don't really matter. Thanks.

I don't know if it's still out there or not, but places like J.C. Whitney used to sell universal weather strip kits. It was in a roll and you just measured and cut to fit.

I also have noise from the back end of my 2007 Ion. A tech at Firestone told me it was a loose heat shield. He replaced the standard rivets but that only lasted for 3 days.
If you have a loose heat shield there's a different thread about this issue that may offer more help.
