Default Radio with aux

I have a 2004 saturn ion 2 and I'm trying to get a new radio for it. I don't want an aftermarket stereo because I think it will look weird. I was looking into other saturns and I saw that a 2006 saturn ion 3 radio has the aux thing. Will that radio fit in my car?

It a not an "aux thing", it's an auxiliary input, and no, it won't work.

From what I have read, the 2004 Ions have 1.5 DIN radios and the 2006 Ions are double DIN.

Do you have xm capabilities in your car? If so then you can splice right into the xm harness in the back of your stock stereo for an AUX input with the help of this helpful tutorial. I do not have the 6 disc cd changer in my 04 and it still works. I was also going to try to see if just having the AUX signal from the device will work so then a person would only need the plug or wire it directly to the pins on the back.

The hole is different, but more importantly, afaik, the harness is different.

All 2000 and newer Saturns have a double din radio opening. The 2006-2007 Ion radios may fit older Ions with some minor alterations to the dash and wiring changes, but they are definitely not a "plug & play" swap.

I say it may be possible because another forum member was able to install a radio from a 2007 Ion in a 2002 Saturn SL2 (link here). The 2000-2002 S-Series and 2003-2005 Ion both use the exact same radio mounting scheme. The 2000-2005 L-Series and 2002-2005 Vue also use this same mounting scheme.

This mod only works with the 2004-2005 radios that say "MP3" on them. A factory-installed XM radio tuner is also required because the tuner communicates with the radio through a data connection and the ability to select the XM1 and XM2 modes via the AUX button on the radio is only enabled when that connection is present. These modes can't be selected if an XM tuner is not connected to the radio.

2004 and 2005 Ions used the same radios, and as I recall one of the options was a unit with a mp3 jack. They were bigger than the standard unit, you'll lose the little shelf under the current radio.

They did not have an mp3 jack. They could only play mp3 files from a CD.

Well there goes my plan to see if it works with just the AUX plugged in.

I really like the idea of a newer stereo in my Ion like one from an 06 or so. That looks like it would be fun.

What would be a good aftermarket stereo for a 04 saturn ion?

Thanks for clarifying that. Indeed, you can install an aftermarket double DIN radio.

Thanks for giving me back my next weekend. My radio has MP3 and the AUX button, but apparently not the XM tuner as the button does nothing when pushed. I'm sure I'll find a new project.

It depends on what features you want and what you're willing to spend. I would say you get what you pay for, but that is way less true now than it was ten years ago. Nowadays, as long as you stick with one of the more popular brands and don't get the least expensive models, the quality and features don't vary as greatly with price as it used to.

I just wish one of those big companies would design a radio that is easy to use and allows you to make minor adjustments while driving without being too distracted. My ideal radio would have a layout simlar to the 2006-2007 Ion MP3 radios. I really like the six multi-purpose buttons and two knobs that those radios have.

Does anyone know if it would be relatively easy or not to install an 06-07 stock stereo from an Ion or Vue into an 04? I figured if I found the diagram for both cars that it would be pretty easy but haven't seen anyone else do this except for the link on this page to an S series.

I swapped out the radio in my 04 with one from a 03 ion, that had an am/fm, cd and cassette player in it. I use a cassette player adapter for my ipod. The 03-04 radios were not plug and play exactly I had to buy a special wire harness from the dealer that made it plug and play. I liked it because it was cost effective at $35 for the radio and the harness and it kept the factory style radio.
