2008 Astra XR
Default The Astra vs Other Cars

I've been curious about this for awhile, but from all of the internet browsing I've been doing, I haven't found one car that can compare to our Astras in terms of design, handling(I think that's very important) and engine power. I've been looking at the new Focus and Fiesta and they're the only cars that I think come anywhere close to the Astra; maybe even a Golf but I'm not sure. Is it possible that a discussion about this could be started?

Sad Re: The Astra vs Other Cars

we traded our astra for a focus,we are now have trouble with the new"dual clutch tranny"
do a search for focus and fiesta dct problems or view the mk3 forums at focus fanatics.
if considering a standard car then the focus is fine.
the so called automatic transmission is a disaster.

there must be a reason why the astra is the second best selling car in Europe.

engine power? For real, anything compares in engine power. Handling feel, yes its pretty top notch there. Talking FWD, the MINI easily unseats in there, but that is a little unfair. New Focus is still too soft and americanized, the ST is nice, but the normal models are very bland to drive.

I think the Mazda 3 compares up nicely. Thats where I am heading next, more a matter of when.

Difficult part is nothing compares in features for the money that the Astra was.

Interesting. As we all know(or should know) Our Astras are European-born cars. By that I mean that it seems that GM didn't "Americanize" them in any way before being sold to the public; though, to be fair, that aux port would have been nice. And surprisingly enough, I've heard that most of the Astras on here didn't come standard with an armrest? Strange because I picked up a used one that had one with a built in cup-holder.

Anyways, in terms of other European cars, what about Volkswagon or BMW(even though their quality is quite bad from what I've seen)? I haven't heard a good thing in terms of quality and maintenance from these cars in recent years. And also, I probably should have added that I'm not in the market for a new car, I'm just curious is all!

I traded the Astra for a Chevy Sonic RS, 1.4l turbo, 6 sp manual. I enjoy it more than the Astra. Feels quicker, Bluetooth, USB, Aux Port, Touchscreen, Sunroof. The 6 sp is what the Astra should have had. The Astra Aux Port was sadly taken over for OnStar support.

The smaller motor was the main thing that pushed me into the Aura instead. I love the look of the Astra, but I really love my 3.6. And I wholeheartedly agree with people who talk about the European roots. These cars are designed for Autobahn driving speeds and they hold the ground really nicely at high speeds. IMO the Astra/Aura are comparable to Audi's. They don't have the ground appeal and may have some lower quality parts, but long term reliability is probably much higher than Audi's.
I like the look of the Astra more than the new Mazda 3's. That bulging front wheel well of Mazda's is a turn off for me

I love the Astra just because it is unique. It's a nice looking, sporty euro hatchback, barely americanized with great handling, comfortable heated seats, a sufficient engine (yes I know the turbocharged euro versions would be awesome, good mileage, projector headlights ,etc... I could go on

My favorite thing though, is that you don't see many on the roads. People are always checking it out. And they are cheap to buy and own. Most people have stereo types about Saturns, and this is why you can get so much car for so little.

I plan on keeping this car for quite a while, and of course I have fantasies of swapping a lsj, or the fancy new turbo diesel from the cruze into it and stuff like that. All in all it's a good all around car.

I traded in a 2005 KIA Spectra5 for my Astra. I think the two cars are very similar. Except my KIA had a rust (rot) problem and it was an overall lesser-quality car.
