Default auto > 5-spd swap?

What's a ballpark figure for a automatic to (reman) 5-spd tranny swap incl. parts & labor? I'm looking at a 98 SW2 with auto but I really want a 5-spd.

More than it's worth unless you can get the parts really cheap and swap it yourself. Probably comparable to what the auto SW costs.

Someone that knows what they're doing (has done it before) could probably do it in 5-6 hours. Average mechanic, if they'll do it at all, would probably charge at least a full 8hr day unless they surprise me. My first took 2 weeks but I didn't work on it everyday, had to work in the grass/dirt and it was freaking hot those 2 weeks, was my first project bigger then a brake job.
As for cost:
$60 new flywheel
$130 clutch kit
$150 clutch hydraulic's
~$50 for various clutch specific stuff; brake pedal, clutch pedel, clutch safety switch(not required), reverse light switch pigtail.
~$15 for 3qt's of generic Dexron/Mercron ATF or ~$50 for a gallon of Transynd
~$400 into it before you even get the big part, though specific price's may vary.
Most 5spd's I've seen for sale people want $150-$300. I've sold a couple spare's for ~$75 each 'cause I think it's stupid to charge that much.
Much cheaper/smarter to buy a parts car with working parts you need.
...
The proper way to fix a S-Series automatic is to replace it with a 5spd O:)

Or just drive the auto. They're really not that bad, and the gas mileage hit is rather minimal.

The auto hurts mileage quite a bit in the winter if you take short trips. This is coming from an auto driver with a scangauge. The torque converter won't lock until it reaches 68 degrees. If it's 10 degrees outside and the engine is cold, this takes forever. I've observed a ~5-8mpg hit from what I'd normally get when the TC locks, ie continuous speed driving. The net impact on mileage from that and warm-up enrichment in the winter is usually around 6mpg for a 5 mile drive.

I suppose that would do it. About 20 mornings out of the year mine takes 1 mile of driving on a real road to lock, otherwise it's already locked before I hit 4th gear. Then again, a bitterly cold winter night here is mid twenties.

Otherwise, I average about 35 mpg in my auto, and maybe 36 in the manuals...but it's usually about the same.

Total cost will depend on the shop, but as mentioned, it's likely to be more money than it's worth. It's really not a bad DIY job if you're at all mechanically capable, and the parts cost is generally quite cheap. IMO if you're set on a manual & can't do it yourself, sell the car & buy one with a stick.
