Default sl1 and sc1 auto transmission swap?

Hello guys, new guy here that has been lurking Saturn forums for the last few months .
My step son started out with a 97 sl1 a while back as a first car, well in the meantime I have been trying to fix it up and make it safe for him.Well a couple days ago he tells me there is something hitting hard under the hood....yup....has a rod knocking. So instead of putting more money in this one he decides to buy another car with his own money, this time it is a 2001 sc1 3 door coupe.
I really like this car and so does he,but bad luck has struck again.yesterday it developed a nasty tranny leak inbetween the engine and transmission. so we took it to a local shop to have them put a new seal behind the converter and go on.Today I stop at the shop to find out that there is a hole in the bellhousing next to where the axle rides behind it! And the previous owner had epoxied a piece of metal over the hole to stop the leak!
So now we have these two cars sitting and I would like to ask the pros if the tranny from the 97 will fit the 2001 and work?

Any help is appreciated.
I am heading back to the shop now so will hopefully get some pics of the tranny.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but....

97 SL-1 should have SOHC Engine with a MP6 Transmission.
01 SC-1 should have DOHC Engine with a MP7 Transmission.

If your 97 is a DOHC Engine , it will have a MP7 Transmission & you can use it.

Both cars should have SOHC engines, which means both came with MP6 transmissions- go ahead and make the swap.

Wrong on both counts. If the SC1 had a DOHC/MP7, the OP would NOT be able to use it. But the SC1 has an SOHC engine and MP6, just like the SL1. The real question is, did the gear ratios for the MP6 change between '97 and '01? Well, let's dial up them interwebz over to the inestimable Low Saturn's encyclopedic site, specifically to http://www.differentracing.com/tech_...gearratio.html . Aaaaand, D'OH, second gear is different! It would probably throw a P0732, incorrect second gear ratio, code.

Should, doesn't mean they do

I got a SL-1 with a DOHC & a SL2 with SOHC.
Checked my VIN to find out both engines were swapped.
Why I stated that..
Need to know if there was a swap at some time.
You never know
Lots of people don't tell you, or don't know
