Default '02 VUE Horn NOT Working

The horn on my '02 VUE is not working. This happen after a bout of involuntary honking following a long honk at an aggressive driver. Reading some past threads on this topic, I afraid that I might be looking at a $1000+ horn switch repair because of its location within/below the airbag.

One question. The horn doesn't respond to the remote either. Does this mean it's possibly the actual horn (or fuse) and not necessarily the switch?

It's likely both. It sounds like the involuntary honking was the switched being jammed, and the fuse blew due to the horn being on for so long. It's also possible that the horn itself just went out, but it's likely due to the switch.

dpware ... I'm with you - I'm not sure the horn switch is the culprit.

Can you follow electrical wiring schematics?

I've attached one for the 02 Vue. You'll note the horn circuit has a horn, fuse, relay, switch and wiring.

You might check the fuse and try to temporarily substitute the relay with a similar one from another circuit. Both fuse and relay are in under-hood fuse box.

Don't despair if it is the switch ... you can add and after-market switch for a few dollars.

Is this something my dealer or a local mechanic could (and will) do? Unfortunately it won't be me!

Unless you know specific reason for horn not working either a dealer or mechanic will most likely charge to isolate.

If the airbag switch is bad: (1) dealer may insist upon replacing the airbag
(there could be exceptions), or (2) mechanic could add a separate switch but might have any number of liability disclaimers.

If you want to try - or know someone with basic electrical/mechanical skills - you can find rework info in following thread (post # 9 advises how to find wires for new switch):

Thanks. I can't do it, and I'm not sure I know anybody I could convince to do it either. First thing, I'll get it to the dealer to be diagnosed. Hopefully it will just be a fuse or relay and I won't fall victim to the thoughtless engineering by the General of the horn switch!

A workaround may be the installation of a horn switch on the steering column. It's cheaper that replacing the airbag.

One poster describe placing switches on the airbag assembly. Bad Idea.
If the airbag deploys, he will have two new piercings...

Get your dealership to confirm the airbag is OK. Then, you can rewire a horn button.

Hope this helps a bit..

OK. So, had a friend check things out. Fuse for horn was blown. Replaced that, but now it seems like horn is blown too. Only making a weak buzzing.

Going to grab a replacement horn on the way home and have friend install it. One question, maybe a dumb one. I see that there are low note, high note and combo horns. What does the VUE have? Thanks!
