Question New to Saturn.. is this 97 SC2 a good buy?

Hey everyone, I'm a sophomore in college looking to get rid of my first car (yes a 93 Dodge Shadow, convert!! ) and I found this car on AutoTrader...

http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.js...=en&cardist=78

I need somethings thats going to be reliable and safe, I have a 150 mile commute to and from school.. and winters up here in the northeast can definately beat up a car. I'm a little worried about Saturn's reputation as a oil fiend, but hopefully someone with the same model year can tell if I should get it.. I'm going to test drive it tomorrow, any questions I should ask the dealer?

Any and all help is really appreciated! THANK YOU!

97 has fuel pump issues someone will chime in with that!

Cute car, oh wait hot car..69k miles seems good and that seems like a good price. Ask it if it burns oil, you can cure it somewhat. Its a double overhead cam so your fuel effeciency might not be as good as a SOHC but you will move faster. As far as reliability, my saturn has broken down on me once (i think) for a busted radiator in the middle of a parking lot. Oh and the time it wouldnt start because I didnt have the shifter in park all the way oh and the time i killed my battery but those are my faults. I have a 95 SL1 no issues with it. In fact I just did 3 400 mile trips in 3 days back and forth with no problems whatsoever.

Find out how much oil its burning, if it has a reisen or brass tipped ects are the two things i know for sure.

Good luck though, nice car and you will like it!

Looks good to me, but there's only one pic. After '96 the oil consuption seemed to go down quite a bit, for the most part. Look for any oil leaks, and see if the ECTS is brass or resin tipped (search the forum for more info) Look at the undercarriage for any excessive rust, the body will look good forever, but the rest can rust, but usually doesn't much. The only thing you really have to do to these cars to keep them going is change the fluids regularly, especially oil, but that's all any car should need. Other than that, it's just the used car basics. Ball-joints, tie-rods, etc. Oh and DON'T buy the aftermarket warranty. They are 100% useless.

If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find him, maybe you can hire Uzzy.

yeah i make a point to never buy from a used car dealer when possible, my dad used to be partner in one so i know everything they do, which is moslty nothing but charge over twice what they paid for it. (but thats up to u if u buy from them) Any ways only thing i would worry about is make sure u change the oil every 3k and check it often, even if it does burn some oil the engine will still last well over 200k if u take care of it

Default 1996 Saturn SC2

I just bought a 1996 Saturn SC2 and when the car is cold the car will go in reverse, but if it gets hot.....No reverse. Does anyone know what I need to fix it?

My gosh, what is up with all this necromancy lately , especially when most of it isn't even related to what the OP is asking.

not to mention anyway, either:

1) the OP picked something else
2) the OP got the car in question, but then sold/junked/traded/whatever it
3) the OP got the car and is quite pleased with it

here's to hoping it's #3.

My daughter had a 97 sc2 fine car.Only thing I didnt like was starting issue. You had to turn key ,adjust your mirrors wait for fuel pump to pressure the system.not a big deal

There's been a rash of necro-posting (or, perhaps more accurately, paleo-posting) lately. Is it zombie season or something?
