under the master cylinder area. Why do you want to replace it? The EBCM will need to be programmed to.

Did this mechanic use a reader/scantool to decode ABS error code(s) to determine where fault lies? Autozone has readers capable of decoding abs codes.

When abs self tests are performed when ignition is turned on (bs indicator cycles on and off for normal self tests) then the car driven a little more than 5-10 mph, the abs cycles its motor and valves to perform a final test. At any time when the abs and/or tc indicator turns on and remains on, abs detected an internal fault and disables itself from interfering with braking. As you already know, braking remains the same with or without abs/tc. Without abs, emergency braking will still lock up brakes as they always do (the reason for abs).

The majority of abs faults are related to the wheel speed sensor, wiring to each sensor, reluctor (toothed) ring damage. The abs control unit rarely if ever fails. The best way to determine where fault lies is decoding errors with a reader capable of decoding abs errors.
