Wrench Cold air intakes

I have noticed that many people who own s-series saturns put a cold air intake on them first thing. Where can I buy one of these cold air intakes? Is it worth the power gain? The car is a 1993 SC1 (SOHC). Thanks!

Not really on a SOHC... they're not known for breathing well anyway, so all you'd likely do is hurt your MPG

yeah sorry man. not much out of cai for a sohc. i heard larger cam shaft would make a good difference in power.

Not worth the cost (unless it's free) on a SOHC, and a pre-fabbed unit won't fit on an automatic.

...
The proper way to fix a S-Series automatic is to replace it with a 5spd O:)

The market for sohc bolt ons is few and far between, and on par with trying to raise the dead. At least with a dohc you're in the hospital and comatose. Until you make the move to dohc be happy with the better gas milage.

Really not worth it unless you free up the exhaust side as well and change the cam. By then the $/hp gain is ridiculous.

Best SOHC performance mod is a For Sale sign. By now, there's about zero difference in price between comparable SOHC and DOHC cars. There's a market for both, because there are as many people buying SOHCs for economy as there are buying DOHCs for power. So sell the SOHC car to an economy-minded buyer, buy a DOHC car and go from there.

+1

Even if you have a "lopey" cam made for a SOHC, chances are a DOHC is still going to have more power

Fixed

There are no chances for a SOHC to make more power without doing much more than a camshaft. Nitrous or turbo, sure maybe, but the SOHC has a lot of breathing to make up when compared to a SOHC. Really do you want to put a bunch of money and time into a SOHC just to equal a DOHC.

I agree with others that the best way to go faster is to trade up. But I'd even advise moving to a different brand of car. SC2s are awfully long in the tooth. I love them, but aftermarket isn't drying up, it is basically dead. And while the cars still offer qualities not found in other makes, you will get more of what you want, power and ability to upgrade, with a better supported brand.

You don't want to spend more money that the car is worth to make crap power. The SOHC Saturn is a cheap car made to do what a cheap car car can do well, economy. Cheap isn't bad but it isn't fast. The DOHCs for their time were pretty darn good, but even they have high miles and limited upgrade path. 10 years ago they were a promising platform, but they haven't aged well.

For instance right now I'm selling a 97 BMW 328i for $2300 with a wheel bearing issue. Less than $250 in parts and tools to fix its issue. When fixed you have a 190HP, 150MPH German sports sedan with aftermarket support. Not to mention the mods already on the car.
