Default goodbye Dale!

I can't believe that what looked like a normal crash in NASCAR took Dale's life. He's a great person both on and off the track and he'll be greatly missed in the world.

In my mind it just wasn't supposed to end this way, but it is not really for any of us to decide the how and when.

I'm still shocked. I saw the replay of the crash, and it didn't look nearly as severe as the earlier one. I guess the impulse when Earnhardt went into the wall was just too great. What a shame...

In 1994, I travelled to Bristol, Tenn. with my brother and some friends to see my first Nascar race. Dale Earnhardt took second that night. It is a shame to see Dale gone. Tony Stewarts' crash seemed to be so much more dangerous than Dale's. It really brings things into perspective about the dangers of motorsports.

Number 3, you will be sorely missed!

Thanks for starting this thread, Patrick.

Its been 5 hours, and I'm still in shock myself. I watched the race this afternoon, and couldn't believe what happened. I first got into NASCAR back in 1990, and Dale Earnhardt has always been my favorite. I have looked forward to seeing him race week after week. My prayers go out to his family and friends.

NASCAR will go on, but it will never be the same.

<sigh> He really was one of the best drivers...had to love the way he bumped other cars. Best wishes to his family and friends.

I'm not a race fan, but I did see the replays of the crash on the news.

I hope he left peacefully. That is awful.

Makes you really think of how dangerous some sports are.

This has come as a shock. From what I just saw reported, it was lower base of skull injury. While I realize that risk cannot be removed from anything, especially racing, it would seem that it might be time for this particular risk to be mitigated by mandating usage of the Head And Neck Support (HANS) system. It is specifically designed to minimize this particular injury. NASCAR has lost 4 drivers in less than a year to this one type of injury.

From what I gathered earlier in the year, the FIA has mandated HANS usage in F1 starting with this season. Specific drivers in other organizations have been told that they will use the device due to their injury history, many sanctioning bodies recommend its use. While we cannot say for sure that use today would have saved Dale's life, I feel reasonably sure that we would be talking about the loss of a 1-2-3 Earnhardt related finish and not the death of a great driver.

It was quite a shock...Sometimes I find myself spouting off about what happened, and other times I am absolutely speechless. It's truly sad when we loose someone in a crash. With NASCAR it seems like the drivers are not just celebs, but are a part of people's lives. We read everything we can about our favorite drivers, we are part of the fan clubs, we buy the hats, shirts, and cars, it feels like we should be having them over for Sunday dinner. When my favorite driver Ernie Irvan won a race at Michigan, he gave the camera a thumbs up, at home I said to my wife "see he thanking me for helping him win the race!" To which I recieved a "yeah,"(eyes rolling)...even though we may not ever meet our favorite drivers, when one passes it feels like we have lost a friend. A friend said "Next time you hear thunder, that's Dale rubbin fenders with Jesus."

Dale wasn’t my favorite drive and I always wanted to see him loose, but not like that. He will be missed and even though I wasn’t a Dale fan I know his loss will have an impact on NASCAR.

There is a wicked picture on the cover of today’s USA Today that shows the crash just when he hits the wall and is being hit in the right hand side. The RF tire is loose and the windshield has come off the car, so the crash may be worse than it appears.

BTW Wasn’t Dale the only driver that still raced in an open face helmet?

RIP

Hey Payrick and Thank you. I have always liked Dale Earnhardt. He was a really excellent driver and father and husband to his wife. He is a legend to racing and to everything he did. To me everytime I watch the races now I will always see the #3 car with Dale in it on the track. I will always want him to win. Dale will live forever, just to bad he won't be on the track to show us. My heart and symponthy goes out to his family and friends.

RIP Dale, you will be missed..........

OK I'm gonna be the bad guy on this one but he had it coming.

Mr. Earnhardt has caused numerous wrecks while being the "intimidator" and I am told a couple of those wrecks he caused were fatal. His aggresive nature got the best of him this time. He got what he had been begging for. Justice??????

I agree with Abe95SC2 about 50%.
Another driver in a faster car was trying to intimidate him. Dale's own technique!
No one deserves to die however.

Randman, I'm with you. I never cared for Earnhardt's often overly aggressive driving techniques on the track (though I never heard he caused any fatal wrecks - is that true?). But I certainly am shocked and saddened to see his life come to such a sudden, violent end. Too many people have been lost this way. It's yet another reminder of how fragile life is...

The anger that I am feeling towards Abe95SC2 right now makes me just about want to puke. A man died yesterday and in your preverted sick mind you see that as being justice? Do you even know anything about Mr. Earnhardt?

Mr. Earnhardt has caused numerous wrecks while being the "intimidator" and I am told a couple of those wrecks he caused were fatal.

Who the hell told you that?!? Sure Dale drove aggressively, but in all the years that I've followed NASCAR I don't remember Mr. Earnhardt killing anybody. The only thing you got right Abe is that you are the bad guy on this one. I could say some more, but I don't want Charlie to kick me off the board.

Sorry to hear that it is possible to feel that way Abe
.

Randman- I'm not so sure about this. I actually thought Earnhardt was blocking at the time to help Waltrip and Jr. in the two lead cars that Earnhardt owned. We'll never know if he was blocking becasue he only wanted to help or if he did it because he knew he couldn't overtake them and he thought someone else might coming out of his draft. It would have been some interview if he was alive to talk about it.

Ya know, I was never really a NASCAR fan until I came to Jacksonville. When I first moved here and started to experience the southern lifestyle, It was my impression that NASCAR was just a bunch of dumb rednecks racing around in circles..
Then it happened to me.. I got asked to go to the Pepsi 400 by a very good friend who happened to be a DIEHARD Earnhardt fan. While walking around the pits, I realized just how much technology and science went into these race cars. I also realized that these aren't just dumb rednecks, but rather business men and public embassadors to a rapidly growing sport...
I had the honor of meeting Dale that day after the race.. What a great down to earth guy.. That day slowly but surely made me a fan, and an Earnhardt fan.

Whether you were a fan or not, there is no denying the fact that Dale was by far, the best NASCAR driver, and the most well known. Love him or hate him, you have to respect him for what he did for the sport.

Abe, I can't disagree with you more... no one deserves to die,, But it does happen..
It is my belief that he went out exactly as he would've wanted to, behind the wheel of his car.
My deepest condolences go out to his family and loved ones. Good bye Dale. You will be sorely missed.

Paul

Well, I don't follow NASCAR (I prefer watching Grand Prix races), but I remember what brought Earnhardt to my attention was a race where he bumped somebody -- afterward, the guy was pissed! The segment proceeded to discuss whether or not Dale's tactics were too dangerous. In today's LA Times, I was glad to hear that with NASCAR's incredible growth, Earnhardt had become a favorite, with barbs now being jabbed at 2 other drivers (forgot the names). Yep, I'd guess that he went out the way he'd wanted, after somewhat "clearing his name." Despite my 1st impression of his being a dangerous driver, I was glad he won Daytona in '98. I also did not think the crash looked that bad -- maybe there's something to be said about the HANS device, as long as there's no dispute that it hinders a driver's abilities, like the helmet laws.
