Default 2008 astra in shop-unable to get parts

Hey everyone just letting you know that my 08 astra with 14, 200 miles has been at the saturn dealer for 2 weeks going on for 3. The issue is that it needs a replacement exhaust cam gear. According to the tech my vehicle is one of several in the country that are having this issue with the cam gear. The bad part is that i was informed today that the company that makes this particular part is no longer making the part so saturn is going to look for another company to manufacture the cam gear. They dont know how long this is going to take. So for now i keep the rental(pontiac g6 for another week or longer). Is anyone out there in this same dilema.? Let me know. I called saturn customer service. I am expecting a call from what they call a district specialist.

Hector, sorry you have to wait so long and unfortunately, I'm not familiar with this problem.

What happened to your car .. did you get a fault, alarm or would it not start ?

i'm 98% sure it would take less time to have a local machine shop make them as opposed to waiting for corporate to find another large company to re-make the dies.

the check engine was on and thats how it was diagnosed as having a bad exhaust cam gear. they are also going to replace the t-belt and tensioner. those parts are in but the gear is the big issue.

Ouch. If it is true that they are getting another company to make them, then you might be waiting a long long time. You just don't find a company and have them start production on a new product in a few weeks.... Image getting something like this done when Saturn in gone.

Man, this is not good. Sorry to hear about your troubles. Seems like the Astra will turn out to be like owning an exotic in terms of parts and repairs. No wonder some people here were comparing it to a Ferarri.
As for all these defective cam gears and timing belt tensioners, when were the cars built, does anyone know if the problem is affecting all cars and is it fixed in the later cars after the technical bulletins came out.

Stories like this worry me and make me kinda kick myself for going with such an 'unknown' in the Astra over the boring offerings from Honda, Toyota, etc.

My question is, why can't a part be shipped from Europe? Are they completely out as well? Hope you can get yours fixed soon, Hector.

if gm fails to receive additional funds, we could be up the creek with no paddle, and no parts!
chances are the company that was making the part went broke and thus no gears.

I'd probably enjoy the time racking up my miles on their rental car and not my own and get a part time job delivering pizzas or something!

As long as they give you a free rental, who cares?

^ I would care. You have a new car that is sitting in a shop because the dealer can't get the parts. I bought an Astra not a G6

No way. I wouldn't let it go much longer to be honest. That is unexceptable.

It is now Friday February 20. My Astra is still sitting at the dealer. Saturday will mark the 3rd week on the G6 rental. Will probably be waiting a long time for this cam gear. I received a call from Saturn customer service and I was informed that nationwide there are about 5 other cases similar to mine. There are 4 other vehicles sitting at dealers with no parts. Just an update.

I dont know what the issue is about shipping the parts from europe. For my astra the issue is that the cam gear is no longer being made by the company in europe. From the information that i received from saturn customer service is that they are looking for another company to make the gear so that we can get back on the road. In the meantime my astra is at the dealer waiting for parts. The only parts that are in are the timing belt and tensioner but they are unable to install none of them until they get the exhaust cam. I am not aware of any production numbers in regards to vehicles that have this issue. It was just reported to me that there are a number of vehicles throughout the nation with this issue. They also reassured me that i was number 1 on their list to get the part once it was availale.
Just an update,
