Default Saturn Astra goes away for 2009...sort of

http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/28/s...ears-for-2009/

This has been wondered about for a while, as some things had actually been listed, but according to this just posted story after interviewing a Saturn official, they have decided to skip the 2009 model year. The number of 2008's sitting around are expected to be plenty, and the game plan then still calls for a 2010 model...well, it should, anyway.

As long as there's enough 2008s left equipped with Stabilitrak they should be OK.

Not the best news but not the worst news either. Hopefully we see 2010 models because based on what was posted in another thread they look very nice. In the meantime, we'll all be enjoying our great Astras!

Buying an Astra is fine and dandy if you plan on keeping the car for 6 years and want to put 100,000 miles on it, but man, if you buy an '08 now or wait much more into 2009, you are really going to eat it on the resale value if you go to trade it in at a later date.

I agree there and considered that before my Astra purchase. The way I see it, I like the car and have no plans to get rid of it anytime soon. I drove my VW 9 years / 98K miles before trading it and only got rid of it because of the expensive mechanical failures. My only concern about our Astras is if parts are scarce and/or expensive. I've seen some threads where there were delays getting parts and that does worry me.

I think if you buy an Astra, you're going to eat it regardless. It's not a car you'd want to buy for the short term.

Unless you are like me and are most likely to run your car into the 100K's +. I consider my 2008 a keeper. I will have to see what the 2010 looks like and unless it has some major "gotta have " features I will still keep my 2008 Astra.

In 2004 when the Red Line ION came out I fell in love with that Blue color but decided to wait. Guess what? it was a one year shot on that blue, bummer. IO am glad I decided to get the first US year Astra, I really like the styling.

btw - I bought my 2007 ION in 2007 and traded it in Nov. 2008. Thats the quickest I ever got rid of a car. (reason: my wife wouldn't learn stick, lol) With all the incentives, I actually came out ahead, so it all depends.

The 36 month warranty doesn't start until you put it into service and in general people seem to be reporting purchases at 5-7K below msrp so I think the early adopters are going to see the bigger depreciation hit, more recent purchasers have less far to drop. Also resale values may be quite variable because market based appraisal sites will have relatively few data points to work off of.

Put another way, buy a 2008 in March of 2009 for 7K below list (14K?), sell it or trade it in with two years of remaining warranty (and lowish miles) in March 2010 for 8-9K below list (12-13K?) and that would not be a bad hit for driving a 'new' car for just one year. A trade for 13-14K less than original list partly due to only 12 months of remaining warranty and having paid closer to list price (now talking about an early 2008 purchase) would be a much worse scenario.

Maybe I'm mistaken, but I don't think that the 2010 Astra is going to be the all new redesigned one. In that article on Autoblog, the spokesperson says that a 2010 Astra is on track for a spring release with very minor changes. To me, this indicates that Saturn is just playing a naming game. Instead of releasing a 2009 model, in March they're going to call what were the 2009 models 2010s instead. Since it's after the first of the year, technically any car released now can be called a 2010. It's just a name game. So in fact the redesigned one won't be out until 2011. Think about it. If Joe Shopper is looking for a car in fall of this year, would he rather look at 2010 Hondas, or 2008 Saturns? Saturn is just trying to get a jump on things by pulling a switcheroo.

And there's nothing wrong with that, but just don't think that the 2010 Astra is going to be any different than what's out there now. My money says there still won't even be an AUX input.

by this I hope you mean "at time of purchase" , don't want to confuse anyone into thinking that means the first tie you bring it into service, LOL.

That might be a good incentive for preventing 'ticky-tack' repairs though.

(Bill Clinton voice) Well it all depends on what you mean by "it". ;>)

Putting "it" (the car) into service, i.e. the purchase/drive it away date. Not putting "it" (the warranty) into service whatever that might mean.

Well this is really going to suck for me, OR turn out to be a blessing.

1) By the time the end of April rolls around there may not be any left (to my liking)

2) By the end of April, they could be sweetly discounted to get them off the lots

Default Re: Saturn Astra goes away for 2009...sort of

I just bought my 5 dr XR at the end of November, it's a 2009 model. I know the dealer is completely out of 08 models and have seen some other 09's on the road.

Are they still importing them to Canada and not the US?

Anyone know how this would impact the re-sale value 5 years from now?

I'm curious what exterior changes were made to make them identifiable as 2009s instead of 2008s "on the road"?

The 08's have the astra and trim markings on the piece of chrome on the back end, while the new ones are place above on the paint.

They're also offering two-tone cloth interiors on the '09s

Nope, not yet. My lease/smartbuy is up towards the end of April. Still seems like a long way to go now considering I feel rushed like there won't be any left by the time I'm ready . I'm very picky with certain things so I'll be pissed if I can find the combo I want at that time.
