Default Need help installing new shifter cable

Hello all

I'm replacing the shifter cables on my brothers 98 SC2 . He had someone start the job and for what ever reason he gave up on the guy and ask me to take a look at it for him.

So, I have the new cable in place and I have a question.

1. On the end near the shift stick , one of the cables has a cable end that has a ball and socket type of fitting. Is there a trick to snapping this end onto the ball? Can I just apply pressure to the back of the cable end and force the ball into the socket? Or do I need to remove something. I just dont want to break the new cable , which is why it is being replaced to begin with. Since this is a new cable set from the dealer the bushing is already pressed onto the end of the cable.

Also, I just pushed the other cable (smaller white one) onto the shifter with ease and you can remove it with very little effort. Is there a clip that holds the smaller one onto the shifter?

Thanks for the help

Rick

Just squeeze it on there. You can use a C-clamp if you need to. Why are the cables being replaced? If it was just that end bushing, there are a lot cheaper and easier fixes. Also where did you get the cables?

Thanks BarnOwl,

I think he picked the cables up from the local dealer. I will try the c clamp method. I'm guessing the other cable end just slips on without any clips to hold it in place? Again , I was called into this project in the middle of it, the other guy had already removed the cable because it was in bad shape.

Thanks
Rick

Barn Owl says there are easier ways to replace the cable ends but does not enumerate them. A little help here. Elucidate those of us that don't know. My SL2 shifter is held in place with zip ties right now.
Thanks

The bushing barnowl is talking about is the same as a wiper blade bushing. It now also happens to be a part one can buy online. Seach for Shifter bushing to read different threads and sources of such a part

I assumed you already removed the 4 13mm nuts holding the shifter? It would be a lot easier to push the ball into the bushing after you removed them. I think a tongue-and-groove plier works better than a C clamp. Also, use a socket on the bushing so you have a flat surface to press with the plier.
