2002 SL2
Default Gas Pedal

Every once in a while, my gas pedal acts like it is stuck in the "resting" position. I have to give it a little extra effort to move it from where it rests. This will go on for a while, but eventually be back to normal. Anyone else experience this quirk? This happens maybe every few months and lasts for a day or two at most depending on how much I'm driving and having to engage the clutch/gas.

Really? I should do the same because I feel it on the odd occassion myself to a lesser degree than his by the sounds of it. I recently joined and changed my ectc for a brass one and cleaned my EGR valve and what a difference in gas mileage, she's back baby! New plugs, wires, and air filter too. Haven't cleaned the throttle body yet though. I did buy the gasket so i can take it right off to do it and have the new gasket to replace the old on hand. 95 SL1 I've had for 4 years and have hardly done a thing until recently, like I said, it still had the cracked resin ECTS! Anything else easy I should do that I have not?.

Throttle body effects the PEDAL? But it has been doing this since it was almost new and only for a while and goes away - as if there is stickum or something on the pedal itself.... I suppose if I understood how the throttle body is connected to the hip bone....

yup, sticky gas pedal usually = sticky throttlebody. They are connected via the throttle cable, which is pretty stiff (has to be). Pop your hood & play with the quarter-circle shaped cable attachment/guide on the throttlebody. If it sticks at all when you push down on it, then there ya go, time to clean the throttlebody.

(pic shows unhooking the throttle cable, just push down without messing with the cable to check for stickiness)

you also have the option of doing a quick-clean without removing the throttlebody.

http://www.saturnseries.net/DIY%20Gu...ck%20clean.htm

which doesn't help with IAC issues much (but it doesn't sound like you're having), but does help with sticky gas pedal issues.

Dont wait to long. If theres enough carbon for a sticky pedal, its not long before your passages get clogged and and the IAC to stick

Do a good full cleaning instead

Thanks again. Makes sense now. Like I said, it only happens once in a while for a short time and goes away. It last happened on Friday on the way home from work. Saturday it was fine and it has been fine since. But I did notice that the engine was idling at around 2000 RPM for a little while first thing on Saturday morning. I'm convinced now that the problems are related.

Yup, could easily be related to a sticking IAC. Do the thorough clean (it's very easy to do) and see if it improves.

Default Re: Gas Pedal

I was having problems with the gas pedal of my 2002 SC2 sticking when first starting out. Some days it would stick and other days it wouldn't. It was kind of annoying and I found myself having to push down harder than I should to get going. I've never done anything to my car besides change the oil and spark plugs, but the guide to cleaning the throttle body was very easy to follow. I figure I saved at least $75-$100 by doing the job myself.

The only difference in my car and the instructions was my TB had 4 bolts instead of 2. That threw me off for a second when I couldn't lift it up. The entire job took me around 1.5 hours and half of that was cleaning off the built up carbon. The back of the throttle plate was solid black. I bought my car used a few months ago and I doubt that it had ever been cleaned.

Remember to re-attach the throttle cable when you are done... I didn't do it and couldn't figure why my gas peddle was on the floor. I laughed at myself when I realized what I had forgotten.

I think my MPG is even better after I cleaned it, but I haven't had a fill-up since I did the work, so I could be wrong on that. Could cleaning the TB increase MPG?
