Default Rotella T-6, 5w40 synthetic, less than $10/gallon at AutoZone

Yeah, I know, we have a sticky thread for oil rebates but this deserves its own thread.

Auto Zone has a closeout on boxed two-packs (2 x 1 gallon) of Rotella T6, normally $39.99, now half off - $19.99 or something.

And . . . if you haven't already done a rebate this year, there is a $14 rebate, so final price is $6 for two gallons ($3 per gallon) after rebate.

Even without the rebate, $10 per gallon is a good price for T6.

I thought for sure they would be out, but when I stopped after work, the rack was full.

Attached pic, four gallons (two boxes) in my trunk, total $40.

Pricing and offers vary by location, as retail stores are regionally managed above their individual store levels.

Advance sells T6 at $29.99/gallon in my area, runs a $5 off in-store rebate from time to time, and that is about it.

This is one of the reasons I was so against synthetic oils initially, when I came here.

Where I live is a heavy automotive-based economy. "Mechanics"(a LOOSELY-used term as I wouldn't let 99.9% even look at my car from 35 yards away, let alone actually put a wrench on it) are a dime-a-dozen and racing(both legal and illegal) is a big pasttime.

So, even conventional gets to be $5-7/quart, with some synthetics being over $10/quart now.

And since most newer cars are having problems with excessive oil consumption, it literally is a huge racket where I live.

BUT!!!!!! After spending 14 hours changing an engine assembly in my 1995 SC2(total time was 4 days of driving to get the engine, replacing its blown head gasket, etc.) I will ONLY use synthetic oil in this car from here on out.

Lesson Learned the "hard" way.

T6 on sale in my autozone and advance auto are 1 gallon for $19.99 + a rebate. Not worth the hassle of mailing a rebate when the walmart full synthetic is 5 qts for a lower price.

Wow, sorry you guys aren't having any luck with this. My Autozone had a display by the window, metal rack full of Rotella oils. T5 was also discounted, don't recall the price because I was excited to see a bunch of the blue boxes.

Weird, just checked part #550048761 on the Autozone website and nothing comes up. I can only find the one-gallon jugs of T6 on the web and it shows $29.99. Must be a regional thing like Saturn Night said.

Yes, it works great. I used it on the last few S series cars I owned. No idea what the person above it talking about in terms of consumption. I suspect something else was going on there.

T6 has higher detergency and does a great job of gradually scrubbing sludge from the internals.

Best,

The T6 is an engine oil, specifically-formulated, for Turbocharged-Diesel engines, which is why it is formulated with higher detergency for scrubbing the soot that builds up in our engine's ring landings and cylinder walls. It also has a higher resistance to oxidation from excessive heat as turbo-diesel engines not only operate at higher operating temperature, they also have much higher combustion temperatures than gasoline engines.

Watch a "Dependable Dodge"(IF the owner doesn't blow the transmission in the process) with the Cummins engines, when some dufus Dodge buyer(as Dodge owners aren't associated with the stereotype of higher intelligence) decides to floor it.

When you see the exhaust, you can be rest assured those engines need an oil that can clean well. Lolol.

Al Gore said he LOVES an owner flooring their Dodge Ram with tue Cummins engines......if that give you any idea what to look for.

As long as the Valvoline is a full synthetic, it should be decent for using in the engine. Resistance to oxidation and sheer protection are the critical elements to look for, when selecting oils for our engines.

The Shell Rotella T6 is recommended, much like Mobil-1 full synthetic and other synthetic oils, for its resistance to oxidation. The Rotella works to reduce consumption rates, as it can be combined with AutoRx additive for cleaning the ring landings on our pistons. Eiron, a member here, has a thread where he cut open his oil filters and shows the amount of soot it can clean out of the engine.

The Shell additives and detergents are designed for cleaning diesel engines, which have higher thermostat ratings(205F vs 188F in our engines) and over double the compression ratio.(23:1 vs. 9.5:1 in our engines) Diesel fuel also leaves more carbon buildup inside the engine, than most gasoline engines do. It is a dirtier fuel and less refined.

Thank you for the info! Since we are talking about oil filters too, will I need something different for the T6 Rotella oil? Or can I just use my standard filter that I would buy?

You can search the forums, for the part numbers. There are many different extended filters, recommended by the members here.

You will want to look up the hot viscosity for the Valvoline before using it

The T6 has been checked - IIRC, it falls into the low range for a 40 weight / high end of 30 weight

SAE 30 has a max viscosity at 100C of <12.5,
40 calls for a min viscosity of 12.5 and max <16.3,
and Rotella T6 5w40 from retailers was 13~13.6 per gov tests
