Default 1994 SL2 factory speakers

Of the 4 factory speakers in my car, 2 of them make bad noises when playing.

The one in the front right rumbles with louder bass sounds, and the rear left makes rattling sounds when the volume is very low.

So I'm looking to purchase new speakers.

My question is. . . . . Are the front and rear speakers the same? I know they're the same diameter. Can anyone come up with factory part numbers to compare?

My idea is to take the "good" rear speaker and use it as a replacement for the bad front speaker. Then, I'll put new speakers in the rear.

Will one replace the other?

I'm actually thinking of using a factory power amp from a GMC suburban to drive the new rear speakers. I have one as well as the wiring diagram, and it will be a simple installation. I'm also thinking of using a crossover capacitor inline with the front speakers to cut down on the bass signal getting to them. And my radio is the 7-band equalizer CD deck from a '99 Grand Am. And, I have an old Bazooka Bass Tube that I'm thinking of installing in the trunk.

Thanks for any input regarding the matching factory speakers.

Preston

I used 4 of these. Cheap and work fine as compared to OEM. If you want more awesome speakers just spend more money.

I had my left front speaker of my SW2 bite the dust recently. I replaced them with a pair of some inexpensive Pioneer TS-F1634R 6.5" 4 ohm speakers (<$25) and they fit the front door openings well and were shallow enough to slip right into the old opening and reuse the OEM plastic weather shield/enclosure. They sound better than the 6-ohm originals.

I believe the rears are the same size -- at least they are on the wagon.

If you search the forum here, someone posted the speaker wiring details so you can get the +/- terminations right.

You can buy the cheapest 6.5" speakers at Walmart ($20) and they will sound the same or better than OEM. The original unit is nothing special. You can buy speaker harnesses if you don't want to spice the speaker wiring.

They're the same junk speaker in all 4 spots '91-'02. There might have been a audio package to get a slightly better junk speaker, but even today's Pyle quality is better than what GM used by default on just about any 90's car.

Most, not all, 6.5" speakers have tabs to fit the 6.75" pattern the S-Series use's so keep that in mind with aftermarket speakers. The front doors do better with a shallow mount speaker while the rears are only limited by how much intrusion into the trunk you want to deal with.

I just crimped on female spade disconnects. One wide and one narrow which I got from the FLAPS.

The ones I linked had ears for the 6.75" pattern. Worked fine.

There was actually three junk speaker options to chose from the factory. Extended range being the best you could get.

As for what speakers I use, I really like my Sony XS-R1646 paired with my Cass/eq radio.

Hey guys! I really appreciate your responses, but
I think something got redirected between my question
in the initial post, and the first response.

My questions were "are the front and rear speakers
the same?" and "are the factory part numbers the
same?".

With one exception, every other response didn't
even apply to those questions. Thanks to fetchitfido
for answering the actual question.

It's pretty evident in the initial post that I'm
trying NOT to spend money as I clean up the sound
in my car. I'm trying to reuse an old speaker
from my own car and I'm running a used radio
from a Grand AM. I'm trying to get away with
replacing only one set of speakers. (I even stated
that I could upgrade with a used power amp from
a GMC Suburban and an old bass tube. Nowhere did
I mention suggestions for new replacements. Not
stated in the post; I have good 6.50" speakers from
the doors of the GMC which would be "new" in my car.
Just not brand new. And they have the correct plug
on the back)

This all stems from me sitting home with time on my
hands because of the stay-at-home order, and the
lack of a paycheck because of it. I'm trying to
stay busy, without spending money.

Again, I appreciate the responses. But they're not
relevant to the initial questions.

One thing I've noticed throughout this forum is that the
actual questions that people ask rarely get answered.
Instead, many of the people here seem to tell you what
to do irrelevant of what the question was.

And even if that's not the case, then the thread
gets hijacked by someone else's post, and STILL
the question doesn't get answered. In this case,
the very first response suggested new replacements
and from then on, that's all that was suggested.

Example here: I ask about reusing my speaker, and
the post is hijacked by 11 posts on what speakers
to buy, wiring harnesses, and adapter plugs. OR,
in another post, I asked about diagnosing the
automatic shoulder harness electronics, and all I got
was suggestions to retrofit later non-moving belts.

Don't get me wrong guys. I really do appreciate
the responses, but they aren't helpful. And the
redirection loses track of the original question.

Well, from the Richpin video (https://youtu.be/x4mchytppo8; Gen2 Saturn), his OEM 10-ohm speaker rear shelf speaker from Mexico looks to be the same size as the dead OEM 6-ohm front door speaker from Singapore I pulled out a few weeks back.

My 2nd gen Saturn has the "premium" sound system with equalizer, so maybe that's why it gets the Singaporean speakers?

I'm not sure the Gen1 Saturns such as yours are the same front & rear, but it's a good bet. The wiring harness connections are the same. Let us know what you find out when you try swapping a rear speaker to the front where the depth clearance is limited by the window regulator assembly.

The cheap Pioneer TS-F1634R 6.5" 4 ohm speakers I mentioned do easily fit Gen 2s and Gen 3s.

The posted video for replacing speakers doesn't apply to Gen1 cars. You don't have to remove the fabric cover to change speakers. There's a grill that comes off, and the speaker is underneath it.

As far as putting rear speakers in the front, I asked the question because I don't want to disassemble the door panel if the rear speaker wont fit in the
front position. Inevitably on a 25+ year old car, plastic breaks and age-warped panels don't go back together the way they come apart.

So, until I get a definitive answer, I'm not even going to attempt it.

My OEM front and rear speakers were exactly the same. See post:
http://www.saturnfans.com/forums/sho...&postcount=117

I'm cheap, but reusing rear speakers for the front is below my threshold.

Inner door skins come off without violence, so you should be able to pop them off no problem.

Edit: mine is a Gen 2 so I guess this is no further help. If I had a Gen 1 I'd just buy 4 new Amazon speakers and be done with it.

If I have 2 good matching speakers, why wouldn't I use them?

Obviously, I don't have the financial capabilities that you guys have
such that you can spend money replacing things that don't need
replaced.
