Default Steering Column Groan.

Okay...you guys have helped in the past...here's a new one for ya. My GFs 98-SL2 has a groan coming from what appears to be the steering column (inside the car) when turning the wheel either stopped or at very low speeds (coming out of the garage).

I'm not a huge Star Wars fan...but get this...it sound exactly like Chewy (Chewbacca) from Star Wars!

Go here if and select the "chew_roar.wav" file if you need to know what it sounds like:

Any ideas?

My guess is the power steering pump...but does anyone know how to check it out?

That's easy. As anybody who's seen The Empire Strikes Back knows, your car is saying "I found C3P0 in a junk pile."

Has the amount of effort it takes to turn the steering wheel changed at all?

No - the amount of effort to turn the steering wheel has not changed in our 99 SL1.

Could be a noisy bushing on the steering rack...

Just a thought. Had a few other cars do this when the rubber was a little dried out.

Took it in today and had the tie-rod ends replaced and the PS system flushed....all is fine now.
