Question 04 Lifter Noise?

I have an '04 Vue with the honda V6 and when it's cold, the lifter(s) are noisy. When I step on the gas, it quiets up, or when it warms up, no noise. Any ideas?

Are you certain you have correct oil in engine (5W20)?

How many miles are on it? You could be due for a valve adjustment - the 3.5 requires manual adjustment.

You sure it's lifter noise and not the fuel injectors ticking?? IMO the injectors are pretty loud on this Honda engine when you first start it on a cold day.

My Vue has 84,000 miles on it. And now it idles rough, and even when hot, the lifter noise is still there when not under load. As soon as I step on the accelerator, the noise stops and it runs great. Is there some kind of valve timing, or electronic problem that would make it do this?

One thing I failed to mention is that I replaced the battery shortly before this started.

I'm interested to hear how you made out with this. I have 99,000 km (61,000 miles) on my 2005 VUE (Honda V6 3.6l) and mine is ticking almost sounds like a diesel when idling. I took it in this morning and they seem to think a bearing could be gone in it (don't think so). Only noticeable when idling, no issues any other time.

Very annoying.. Changed the oil from semi to full synthetic when I heard the ticking and that made no difference. The vehicle has been well maintained an all kms are highway.

Also not happy I think I need another passenger side front strut. (I think this will be the 4th plus a wheel bearing)

Let me know how you folks made out.

Recommended Valve Adjustment is 100K. Could be the valves being loose than spec. Also, based on my experience the throttle body gets really dirty and needs to be sprayed with cleaner at 50-80K. Symptom is engine shuts off when idling. The throttle body is sticky because of the soot accumulation. Easy to check, just take apart the airtube and clean.

Let us know what you find out.

My 2006 vue V6 Makes a grinding like noise when warmed up in the belt area. It is a repetitive noise tends to more frequent when engine is warm. Saturn already replaced the belt.

I always use 5-20 Mobil 1 oil
1 oil change I used Motorcraft 5-20 Fully Syn and no diff.

Any Ideas what that could be?

Do you have or could you perhaps borrow (rent) a mechanics stethoscope?

This little guy can come in handy when zeroing in on a noise.

I've had the accessory drive belt tensioner go bad on a Dodge 3.8 minivan. It made a whirring, and at times rattling sound, after the engine ran awhile. I could also see the shaft wobble when the noise was loudest.

I'll check the service manual and post whatever I find later this evening.

No one i know has one, worst case i can uy one. I have brought it to Saturn Many times tehy said they could not hear it and they would need more. It was there like 6 days i think they are full full of b.s. at that saturn dealer. They just replaced the belt bit that did not do anything.

Thank for looking that up.

It is coming from the belt area of the car.
Do you think it could be coming from the timing belt?

See attached service manual extract ... won't be much help but only item I've found for ticking / tapping at idle.

I've attached two extracts. One is for accessory belt trouble and the other will give you an idea of whats lurking in and around the timing belt.

The drive belt procedures indicate you can run the engine without the belt for a few seconds to determine if the noise is still there. If noise is gone its probably one of the driven components ... if still there ... it could be inside the timing belt drive area.

You'll note they're for 05 Vue ... my manual does not cover anything later ... I do believe the engines are unchanged 04 to 07... good luck!

What ended up fixing the problem was replacing front motor mounts. Weird huh?

So I have the same problem for over a year and have been throwing parts at it. So the whole time it was motor mounts??? Which motor mounts did you do ??

I have no idea about what fixed his issues, but both top and bottom motor mounts are fairly easy. There's also a transmission mount behind the driver wheel. Do them all at once. Probably $150-200 and 2-3 hours of your time.
