Default Let the Opelizing Begin!

Finally got around to debadging the Astra and preparing it for the Opel badges I just ordered via eBay. All I have left to do is grab a grill from the VXR shop, find some door sills, get an Opel air bag, and get the KPH/MPH speedo to work the foglights.
It seems like a lot more in writing...
I'm toying with the idea of painting it the Opel Arden Blue but that would be quite an undertaking.
I'll post a picture of the badgelessness when I get home (work PC blocks everything...)
At any rate, I'll keep everyone posted with pictures and whatnot as the process continues

Still don't understand this re-badging nonsense. Why make your car something that it's not; plus, there are more Opel Astras than Saturns...

I think more people are re-badging than are just leaving it alone or de-badging. I guess it just makes my Saturn more rare in a way....to each their own.

In the end they look good, but still...

Saturn logo is ugly. Not a big fan of the Vauxhall logo either. Love the way Opel badges look. Good luck with your project! I only replaced the grill and rear badge.

Hi all,

Rock on, Stoickiwi! I re-badged my Astra and love it. The Opel badge looks great and there's a lot of history behind it. Saturn is no more and will become rarer and rarer and sadly, will be forgotten, like Geo and Asuna. Often people ask "what kind of car is that?" I answer Opel, which usually elicits a perplexed look, how much more unique can you get? Some may notice the Saturn badged wheel covers and say "oh, I see, it's a Saturn." My response, again is "it's an Opel."
...
Kind Regards,

From that statement I hear "I know it's a Saturn and I'm ashamed of it and I tried making it something it kind of was but isn't."

You can polish a turd, put it in a wrapper, and call it a Snickers bar...but if it looks like poop and smells like poop, it's probably not a Snickers....so I wouldn't eat it

Not saying the Astra's a turd....but yea.....they took the power and everything that made the Opel/Vauxhall version pretty sweet away....except the shell....

I've actually had more people know what it is when I tell them that it's an Opel than if I tell them it's a Saturn. Debadged rear and GM emblems, but everything else still clearly says Saturn on it. One guy even asked me how I managed to get an Opel legal here, and why I'd go through the trouble for "just an Astra" as he called it.

Well it's not about being ashamed of anything. I love my Astra regardless of what logo is on it. I do enjoy being different and having a unique car. I owned one of the first Fiat 500's over here and nearly converted my Pontiac Vibe to a Toyota Voltz. I think it is just plain fun to do it! Plus, it used to be an Opel, so returning it to its roots is kind of fun!

Here is the pic I promised:

I love the de-badged look; to me, that's the only way to go. All the logos on the outside but the wheels and grille (which I blacked out) are left.

I actually toyed with the idea of painting the car Tardis blue too!

On a side note, I'm trying to procure the final piece to the external debadging puzzle, the Opel Grill. I found a nice one for sale but it came from an Opel Astra H GTC 2009. Am I correct in thinking that these will not work with my Astra because it came from a GTC which are 3 door only? Ours need 5 door grills, correct? Also, if anyone has an Opel grill or knows where to find one, please let me know!

Saturn purists don't recognize the Astra because of its tainted pedigree. So why not rebadge it as an Opel? In the end, the car remains a huge commercial and performance failure so you might as well make it confusing for people to guess what car they just passed at a high rate of speed.

The Astra was the icing on the cake for all that was wrong with Saturn and its ultimate demise.

Despite the crazy weather this weekend, I got around to the next step of the Opelization!

Luckily my pal has a garage with a lift we could use and we got the Opel and 1.8 logos on the back along with the wheel caps.

Also, my Arden Blue calipur paint came in and I am very pleased with the results! It's a bit more subtle of a blue than I thought, but it looks great with the silver

Can do! The grill should be coming in soon and I'll definitely post some more pics then. Hopefully most of this snow will be gone too!

interesting. until they brought the astra over there was not a saturn made that i would consider for myself, or recommend to someone else. saturns were always one or two steps behind the competition until the astra came ashore.

maybe that's what was wrong with the astra - it was a competitive vehicle, hence it being the second biggest seller in europe for many years.

I must stop feeding the trolls.

IMO it's trying to be unique. There aren't many Astra's in the US, so you are already very unique. I do like the Opel insignias over the Saturn ones.

So I know it's been a while since I last posted in this thread but I wanted to give a status update with pictures!
I'm only missing one part for the Opelizing to be completed! That would be the spark plug cover and it's on its way from the VXR Shop as well so it won't be long!
Sorry that these pictures are a little rough, there was a break in the rain and I wanted to get them taken fast while it was still nice!

What I've done so far:
  • Rear Logo
  • Rear 1.8 Logo
  • "Astra" Door Sills
  • Front Grill
  • Wheel caps
  • Airbag Cover
  • Amber turn signals
  • KPH/MPH Speedometer

I will post a how-to for the amber turn signals when I can (I'm still working out some bugs).
Also, it's not official Opel, but the brake caliper decals look nice

Stop, Picture Time:

I dig the opel decal on the calipers, and I'm surprised to see you got a real airbag. That must have cost a fortune, mine (Vaux) was a pretty penny too.

Yeah, after painting the calipers the Opel Arden Blue, they just weren't as noticeable as I would have liked. The decals definitely helped with that and I think they turned out great!

The airbag was definitely the trickiest part to acquire. Due to international shipping restrictions on most websites, I was told many times that the airbag wouldn't be possible.
Thankfully I was prowling around eBay.de and found this little gem:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/251238323902...84.m1439.l2649
It is simply the plastic cover on top on the airbag, hence no shipping restrictions!
So I ordered it pronto for 85€ and purchased a Saturn Astra airbag for ~$60 on eBay, swapped the cover and there you go!
It may have been a roundabout way of getting it, but at least it ended up the same.

Just out of curiosity, how did you get the airbag over here?
I'll be kicking myself if it was a heck of a lot easier.
