Default Re-painting an Sl2

How much do you think it would cost to repaint an sl2? I would really like to get mine painted black. I would just remove all the body parts and bring them to the shop to get painted, door panels, fenders, trunk, etc... The only parts i would have to get painted on the car would be the roof and hood.

So what do you guys think it would cost? Anybody already get theres repainted? How much did you spend, and what does it look like?

Why would the hood need painted on the car? 4 bolts & it's out, and it's light enough that if your arms are long enough, one person can take it off (though I would recommend 2).

Cost will vary greatly on who does the work, what the paint is, what the prep is, and more. Could be $500-2,000.

wouldnt it be slightly more cost effective to go get all the black body panels at the junk yard from a car with a blown motor and then have them paint the roof (since you have to take out the windshield to replace the roof.)

$299 - $6,000+ depending on how nice you want it.

Check out black-gold. It was an OEM color on some saturns... really good looking black.

Thats correct. That was never a black first gen sedan or wagon from the factory, But you could get the coupe in black in 91-93. Then in 96-98 black was brought back and was available in sedans and coupes.

[off-topic alert] I imagine a black wagon would look just a little too much like a mini-hearse.....

To back up Low's post; my 94 SL2 is a factory color that is called "Black Sapphire". If you look at my car it's an extremely DARK Midnight Blue type color, but this color was not an "official" black color as Low eludes to not being available until later on.

Something I find kinda funny is that the names of the colors in the FSM dont match their names in the sales brochures.

Like Blue/Black is called Black Saphire.

That's 'cuz they want people reading the FSM (mechanics, primarily) to _understand_ what they're reading, and they want the people reading the sales lit (potential buyers) to _feel_ good about what they're reading.

I'd think most people would feel better if someone asked what color their car was and they could say "Black Saphire" instead of blue/black.

I kinda remember the wording in the literatue back then saying that they didnt have fancy names for the cars colors, they just called it what it was.

But its also kinda funny when someone askes, what color is your car? It kinda looks black-gold. What do they call it? And you can answer, its.......black.......gold.

You laugh, but I actually saw someone do that to a '70's Mustang. The results weren't exactly pretty.

I painted the front fascia of my SC2 with a couple cans of Krylon white enamel paint from Home Depot. If you take to time to prep the part correctly, apply the paint in several thin even coats over the course of a couple hours, let it cure and harden for several days then buff it out. It comes out pretty awesome.

Are there any risks with the paint cracking if the bumper gets hit and flexs? Being its just run of the mill spray paint.

I think a satin or primer black Saturn would be pretty cool. Do it.

Most paint expert have said that it is the worst thing to do to a car because the primer will capture moisture and cause the car to rust over time, but you will only be painting 3 metal surfaces and they tend to be on the high dry side of the car. If should be just fine.

I don't really want a satin finish, i want gloss. I want it to look like how it would look if it rolled off the assembly line in black. You think i would save money if i just brought the panels and bumbers to a body shop, instead of the whole car?

I'll let you know if it ever happens. Its been on there for about 10 months without any issues. Before I painted the fascia, I tested out the process on a spare door panel I had. I flexed the heck out of it until the point of snapping the panel. The paint never cracked or peeled.
