2009 Astra XR
2005 RELAY-2
Default I got a great deal but still feel ripped off

Three days ago I bought a 5 door xr. none of the new cars on the lot had there window stickers in them. I asked to see the window sticker for the two astras I was interested in they gave me a partial photocopy of one that did not have the M.S.R.P on it. To make a long story shorter we started to ask about discounts and was told there was a $7000 discount off M.S.R.P, I also had a loyalty bonus some GM points and a trade in so in the end got $9700 dollors off. BUT it turns out after doing some looking online I find the MSRP on the dealer website for the car I bought was $1075 less than what I was told, in other words I didn't get the deal I thought I did. Do you think I have any avenues to pursue this should I talk to the dealer or go higher up the food chain, what are my chances...........thanks I really like the car and still feel I got a good deal but the dishonesty really p###es me off...............

I'm not sure about Canada, but in the United States, all new automobiles are required to include an official form listing certain information about the car; this window sticker is commonly called a Monroney sticker in the industry (or simply a window sticker).
The sticker is required to be affixed to the side window or windshield of every new car sold in the United States and can only be removed by the consumer (US Code Title 15 Chapter 28 Sections 1231-1233). A fine of up to US$1,000 per vehicle plus one year in jail for each offense is authorized if the sticker is missing.

who cares what MSRP is. it is just a made up random number. you pay x dollar for a car. if you think it is worth it, it is. MSRP doesn't change anything.

let's say you bought the Astra for $10k. does it matter if it is $5k over MSRP, or $100k under MSRP ? it is the same car, and you paid the same price.

You got a damned good deal for your car, no need to get pissed off. There are plenty of us that paid 100% full price for the Astra while others got over $10,000 off their exact same brand new Astra.

I got a loaded XR3, $22,000. About $1,000 of that was extra crap the dealer said that I "had to pay for" because they already added it into the sticker price.

The car has been rear-ended twice and adding on the fact that GM is dropping Saturn, I now have a $355 a month payment for 4 more years on a car currently valued at a little over $10,000.

You tell me if you got a good deal or not.

I guess my point is all the numbers were based on a inflated starting point, so the discount and deal represented was based on a bogus starting point. If this is the way they conduct business its hard to trust anything they tell you and getting a vehicle serviced when your not sure you can be trusted is not something I look forward to. Does anyone know if in Canada other non Saturn GM dealers can do warranty work now or only after Dec. 31st

Yes, I can see you being upset about that - I recently had to pay my annual car tax to the state, and it was based on a $13,000 value for the car, but that is a good $2000 above its book value. When it comes down to an organization getting money from you, they'll do everything they can to sap each last penny possible.

I guess my point was that you got a really good car at a very good price, there was no need to get upset over the fact that you could have gotten it a little cheaper. Don't get me wrong, I'm not telling you to suck it up, if you want to pursue it then go for it.

Actually, a factory MSRP levels the playing field amongst local dealerships. I seen on more than one occasion cars with missing MSRP stickers and small plastic stickers on the windshield with the MSRP hand written instead. Who's to know if that dealer isn't artificially boosting the MSRP in order to make their advertised discounts appear even bigger than the dealer on the other side of town?

I used Car cost Canada...and got a good deal...

Car cost shows you the MRSP and the actual dealer cost...plus all incentives and they wave all admin fees...got my astra 3dr XR with leather, 18" for 18710$ plus all the other BS like freight, taxes etc...came to a total of 23045$

I feel pretty good about that deal...and yours sounds pretty good as well...plus you got the 1000$ off for owning a GM..

Cheers

With all this talk of Astra's selling for next to nothing now, I was starting to think I was the only sucker that paid nearly 30k (CDN) for my loaded XR5 a year ago!

We got $5000USD off sticker minus $3500 for an old klunker. Not bad since there are not many 3dr manuals still available in my market.

Well, all of us can feel slightly better having paid our (apparently wildly varying) prices for our Astras. A quick look on the Irish Opel website shows the Astra Sporthatch (essentially the 3dr XR) STARTING at 23,020. EUROS. That's $36095 CAD. Though I'd pay a little extra to trade that fancy trip computer for our Commodore 64 junker. It's like we're driving the Space Shuttle.
